Got in my car last night and every warning light came on. Took it to dealer immediately, this morning they called me with news that the hybrid battery needed to be replaced as did the 12 volt battery. The error code is P0A80. My car just passed the 100,000 mile warranty mark - Im at 109,000. Always have done warratny service. The battery is 3500 to replace. Any recommendations? How do I know for sure they are telling me the truth?

get a second opinion. test your 12v first, (it's relatively inexpensive) or just replace it if it's the original. check the battery vent fan to make sure it's clean and working. there are plenty of resources for used or rebuilt batteries and lastly, call toyota to see if they'll help with the cost of a new battery if you choose to go that route. all the best!(y)

They said the 12 v battery also needs to be replaced. I'll ask them about the battery vent and regarding the second opinion - where - at another dealer? Is it safe to drive? I asked the service advisor and he said it may not start, then I asked if it could stop aon me while I was driving and he said yes - I do alot of highway driving and am a fraid of having car shut off on the expressway.

yes, go to another dealer if it comes to it. how was it driving before all the lites came on? the 12v should be checked and/or replaced before driving. was there any erratic behavior on the battery charge meter on the dash?

Before the lites came on I noticed for about 2 days that the engine would do this revving at lights, and a little sluggisness that would go away once I was on the expressway. Yesterday when I got off the expressway the engine jumped around a little making me think is was going to turn off (not like the quiet on and off normal of a prius). I didnt notice the battery charge meter because I dont have that screen up while driving usually.

that's definitely a potential sign of bad hybrid battery. hopefully someone with more knowledge will jump in here. i would get a rental and begin exploring options.

Hello. As bisco said, test your 12 volt battery first. Spending 3.5k for a replacement hybrid battery is definitely not an option imho. These batteries consist of an array cells, have the cells checked to find which ones are bad and have them replaced. Each cell costs around 40 bucks.
