I think it's this way on most cars. Even my Audi s-line A4 only had actually leather in the insets, not the whole thing. My 2010 has leather (ahem, "leather") and it's just okay. I like it better than cloth but I think I like the overall look and feel of Toyota Softex better. I'll have to watch for signs of wear and tear as mentioned above.

There may be one way to tell whether it is factory installed or port installed leather. If the on/off switch is under the center console, it is most likely factory installed. If the on/off switch is at other position (e.g. on the side of the seat between the seat and the door), it must be port installed or after-market installed.
When I ordered mine 2010, it supposed to be factory installed. On the day of the delivery, the dealer gave me a car without leather seat. Their solution was to have an after-market installer to mount the leather seating package (which they claimed is the Toyota supplied kit). Hence, my on/off switch is on the side of the seat but not under the center console like the IV.)

I have the gray "leather" seats in my 5. The seam on the outside edge (knee height) driver's seat ripped open. I had 35,095 when it happened. After the trip to the dealer, it was at 36,006. They fixed it, but only after a call to Toyota to approve the repair free of charge.
The seats still look brittle and I figure it will happen again at some point :(

The factory leather seats on my 2010 are also brittle. Crappy leather quality. My 2010 seats looks like those from a car that was used in desert climate for about 10 years.
