    Took in to local Toyota dealership for the 5,000 mile service. Most of what is done is check this or check that. Did have them replace oil/filter & opted to pay now vs using the 10,000 mile service. Cost was $73 which I thought was reasonable given the cost for parts.

    Tires should have been rotated..????
    Haven't paid for an oil change so I don't know if your cost ($73.00) is the going rate..?

    Tires should have been rotated at every 5K. You should have waited until you get to 10K to change your oil for free and not paying for $73. Oil at first 5K is not that bad specially with synthetic oil. I'm at 6K and oil still looks good.

    If you consider 5 quarts of oil and a filter to be about $30, you got a great deal. I had the oil changed at 10k for free. I plan I stick with that OCI for the life of the vehicle unless I notice oil consumption.

    Thanks. Yes, they did the tire rotation. My estimate on parts was $35-$40 since synthetic is used. Paying $30 or so for labor was worth it to me since I don't have to raise the car, find a oil filter wrench etc.

    I know the factory says you are good until 10K miles, but I'm a bit old school and come from the days of non synthetic oil changes @ 3K miles.

    The 10K mile change will be at no cost.

    It takes me around 20 minutes to change the oil myself, so I would have to have an additional income of $90 net after taxes per hour to make it 'cheaper' for me to take the car to the stealership.

    I wonder what fraction of people who use this excuse actually meet the rationale. Personally, I prefer to work as much as I find tolerable, and change my own oil.

    Its simple math. Time vs Money. That ratio is different from person to person.

    On the flip side, I usually change my own oil, but with the newer cars, the incentive to allow the dealership to perform is more persuasive for me.

    On the other hand, when buying a car I am ruthless and will grind until I get the price I want. Case in point - I bought my 2013 v in Jan 2013 in one of the hottest markets (So Cal) for the car.

    MSRP=$31,932
    Discount=$3825

    This was thousands below so-called dealer invoice. Took me a month or so to get this deal.

    Yes, I know. That is why I think most people who use the excuse are deluding themselves.

    Tell me, how much time do you spend

    1. Going to the oil-change place
    2. At the oil-change place

    I am also curious if you actually put in more work-time to cover the oil change cost.

    OK Toyota pays for the first 2 years of Maint, 5k tire rotations included, Toyota says 10k on oil based on the engine is not always running, Mazda says 7500 both using 0-20w full synthetic

    Cheers.

    No need for lame excuses along the way, either.

    Have to agree with you on this one. I'll be taking my car in tomorrow for the 5k service. I know they won't change the oil but I too will be paying for the oil change (if I can't talk to them to give it to me for free). I do my own oil changes on my old car (2001 Mitsu Galant), but prefer to have them change the oil on the Prius V since I'm taking it in anyways. The oil may not be as dirty, but due to the break in period I'd rather have it changed. I've seen some cars with metal shavings in the oil after the first oil change after the break in period.

    My plan of attack though is to take my own synthetic oil. I usually try to find it when out shopping for $25ish for a 5 quart jug and the dealer only charges me $20 and change for the labor. This gives me peace of mind plus I get time to stroll the lot and maybe take a car or two for a test drive (have a buddy that works there).

    If others don't or can't pay for an (arguably and possibly unnecessary) additional oil change then that's their choice.

    I was told that the first oil change should not be done before 7500k Toyota puts special additives in for the break in period.

    Unless you're planning on keeping the car for 200,000+ miles and doing an early oil change as a 'preventive' maintenance, what's the point? I think it's wasteful in terms of $'s and for the environment. My brother used to do all kinds of things to his vehicles because it was 'better' for the car, but never kept it long enough to benefit from it. However he's still driving his old Civic hybrid with 200k miles on it, and he only did scheduled maintenance on it except he said he's still on the original spark plugs.

    Toyota gives me the first 2 oil changes for free which puts me at 30k the next oil change on the dealer which they charge $60 for a 0-20w synthetic so I need to do 2 more at dealer to break even, then I am making out. The dealer is putting in 0-20w synthetic so at every 10k I get a free one............ It keeps customers coming back to them

    Did your brother send the car to the junkyard when he was done with it, or did it end up with another owner ? A long-lived car is in general good for the environment, no matter how many owners.

    That would be the ideal plan. I will do the initial oil change at 5k and the rest at 10k unless I notice any change in mileage or any other issues. I also have an 07 Tacoma that I did the same routine to and it's pushing 237k miles plus and still going strong.

    I'm not against waiting 10k for the oil change, but I prefer to do the first one at at least 5k.
