I've had my 2005 for about a month now. I decided to give it some time to get used to driving it and such but now that I've filled up for the 3rd time I'm wondering if it's time to get worried.

I'm only getting about 25mpg over the time I've had the car. That's based on averaging over the last few weeks. When I bought the car, the dealer had just replaced a part that regulates the shift between the ice and the electric motor. Everything seems to be running fine.

I have the heater set pretty low but it is cold and had been here in Iowa. But would cold put the mpg that far off of what I expected?

Has anyone ever even seen 25mpg in their prius?

I've read all the material I can find about how the car operates and have tried to adopt the techniques , but to no avail.

    Anyone with any ideas?

tell us about your commute and how many miles per day/week/year. is it hilly there? what tyre pressure? how old is the 12v battery? what does the hybrid battery meter typically read? are in in below zero territory?

Well my commute is short, only a few miles each way but during the holidays I made a bunch of longer trips around town. It's Iowa, so not too hillly, the 12was replaced not long ago. Tire pressure 42 psi.

It's been incredibly cold the last few days, -15 Fahrenheit. But before that typical winter temps.

On acceleration the meter reads anywhere from 8-10 mpg at start to 40-99 at speed.

Not having experience with this car I'm not sure what I should be seeing. I haven't had the opportunity to take a longer trip on the interstate.

25 is pretty low, but short trips at 15 below could do that. the battery meter is the vertical icon with bars that go up and down based on the state of charge. it should hover somewhere in the middle, and go down to low if you're in creep and crawl traffic, or fill up if you're coasting down a long hill.

See, that's the thing. I haven't been getting 25mpg only when it's been 15 below, but over the whole month I've had the car. At first my tire pressure was low but I fixed that and have seen no improvement.

My battery meter stays a couple ticks above the middle, sometimes gets to one green and rarely full but never for long. It's never been below the halfway mark in the time I've had the car.

By dividing what goes in by how many miles driven. It's not precise, but close and it tracks with what the display says.

Are you letting it warm up at all before driving? What kind of heat settings do you use? If you're only going a few miles in the cold, the car won't get to full operating termperature, having the heat on makes it that much worse.

I agree--if your driving trips are all pretty short (10 minutes or less), and the weather is cold, that could bring the mpg average close to 25. Driving in snow/slush also reduces the average. It takes about 10-15 minutes of driving to get the car into the later warm-up stages, when more typical mpg is observed. You can read about the warm-up stages in the pdf document attached to this thread:

Prius Stages of Operation & Operating Mode Availability -A Reference Aid | PriusChat

Also, don't forget to reset your mpg average, as it does not automatically reset when the fuel tank is refilled like the mile counter on the screen.

As soon as you get warmer day (40+ or so) and clear roads with little wind. Get it out on an open road and do a round trip of 20 miles or so using Trip B to measure that segment. Pick a speed and stick to it within reason. Windows up, no or minimal climate control. Report your results here, including speed.

Before that, if you shift to neutral, does it glide ok, or do you feel negative g's like a brake is dragging or the alignment is off? At 42 psi, it should glide like a dream. What tires do you have? Performance tires will hurt vs LRR's.

25 is too low. The Gen3 (2010+) handles short trips better and probably cold temps better, too. For reference, our 2010's worst tanks in dead of winter Wichita with some snow/slush plus short trips yield 39 mpg. 4 year cumulative is 51 mpg, so take comfort that you will do better 3 seasons of the year. But you are too low right now.

Stick with the car and with us and see what we can determine together. Good luck.

How do you reset the average mileage?

I have Goodyear integrity tires on there. I should check the pressure again. I put it up to 42 before the cold snap.

I'll try to get out for a longer trip and use trip b.

Thanks all. I've been worried something's wrong with the car.

To reset the average mileage on the MFD, hit the reset button under the "Current" bar on the right. I don't think the Gen2 calculates mileage for the trip A and B.

25mpg still seems low, but its probably fine if the highway test turns out normal.

Oh yeah, I did that when I got the car.

Is there any way to see lifetime mileage info?

another thought is to check the 12 volt battery. some have had new ones that were bad.

Took a couple 20 mile or so drives in the past few days and blocked the grill. Sitting at 41mpg at the moment. Making progress.
