Do you use RSS? Read Priuschat via a RSS Reader!

To me, the concept of forums like this one is to keep the email inbox from being overloaded with various emails. I check in here often throughout my workday. It's acutally easier to do just this instead of resorting even more email.

I don't need or want my e-mail overloaded with posts. I just come by when I get the time and check the latest when :computer: I log in. It works Great and I enjoy the freedom to only check out what I want. I usually check out everything since last log-in any how. That's my 2 cents :!: :roll: :wave:

 

I am checking into the RSS software. It seems like a good idea if I can figure out what it can really do for me.

One thing that I am missing is a way to "reset" my unseen messages since I was last on. I look at the recent page, view the ones I want and then click something to clear it out for next time. For me it keeps increasing and I can't really find the new stuff from the not-so-new stuff.

It is still a lot better than trying keep up wiht the Yahoo babble.

I've found I don't have to log-out but simply close my browser (IE6), restart it, and click the link. That seems to reset the "view posts since last visit" to zero.

 

My problem with using RSS is twofold:

1) No good way to stay in sync both at home and at work, as I browse during both sets of hours.

2) I don't believe there is an RSS reader for Solaris 8 (I use a Sun at work)

There are Java and web-based RSS aggregators. I would love to have a Priuschat.com RSS feed. Once you start using a news aggregator, there is no going back.

Even just a feed of "the most recent" posts would be great. That should be pretty easy, and a good way to guage real interest.

Is there an RSS reader for the Mac? The one that Danny mentioned is only Windows.

the "view new posts since last visit" works so well i dont
feel the need for the stream. but i am on a dial up
connection and therefore i wouldnt want something like
that taking up any of my "not so ample" bandwidth.

 

I agree with Wolfman. Come, enter, read, post, leave. I get 80 emails a day; and I'm not a network administrator.

Also, please remember that most of the world does not have a degree in IT. Keep it simple, accurate and easy. Just because its possible does not mean it should be done or is needed. A good example is the Prius; the more user friendly it became, the more people bought it. :clap:

RSS for Solaris, Mac, etc.

The Opera browser has versions for several operating systems including Mac and Solaris: http://www.opera.com/features/index.dml?pl...latform=solaris

The mail handler is the application that handles RSS feeds. I've only been using RSS feeds for a short while but they're quite handy for a variety of news sources -- I find it much easier than wading through a standard news portal and I can skim more categories than I would otherwise have time for.

I'll definitely give RSS a shot for PriusChat and report back on how it works out.

Woops! I just tried the RSS feed link that Danny gave and it seems to be a dead link. Is this a future feature? I thought from Danny's post that it was available now. Or maybe this RSS implementation is different than the other RSS feeds I'm already using and my reader doesn't recognize it? I'm pretty ignorant of the technology so I'm not sure...

 

After finding out what RSS is, I would change my vote to NO, I would not use it. The closest vote I had was "Yes, if I knew what it was." this should have been I don't know.

Anyway, I prefer just going to the board, and I do not want notifications of new posts to the board. I get too much 'stuff' as it is in my email(s).

 

Apparently Yahoo has a RSS reader that can be built into your personal My Yahoo page...I'm not sure if PC would be compatible with that, but it would be interesting to see topics mixed into my news and entertainment update on my home page.

i use xp media center late at night and view all my news and email via media center using rss and pop3.
if you enable this, i will still visit the site during the day and use RSS like a madman.
i would like a link to the direct xml, please.

Thanks for the tip on Yahoo; I knew they had RSS feeds but hadn't noticed that you could had them to the home page. I just added PC to my Yahoo home page and it works just fine! All that shows is the subject with no content so you have to click through to read the content.

Using "My Yahoo" (or any other compatible portal, I haven't heard of any others but then I haven't looked for them) would seem to address an earlier concern about keeping synched from home and work. This way PC is another news source and you can see the equivalent to PC's "View posts since last visit" but you still have to visit PC to actually read the content.

When I view the PC RSS feed in my Opera browser I actually see the subject/topic just like an e-mail with the content in the preview pane. It will be much easier for me to keep up with the content this way but I can still easily reply by clicking the link at the bottom of the post which takes me directly to that post on PC in a new browser window. It's the best of both worlds.
