Arghhh...looks like my mystery growling noise at idle is the WP going bad. Not leaking but making a racket at idle. How long is it safe to drive this way? Dealer wants $350 to replace it. Fair?

I was originally quoted $500 from the dealer near me. I personally feel any capable mechanic can change this water pump.

Only the electric water pump was recalled, not the ICE water pump

Thinking about doing a DIY ($40 WP from Autozone). I watched the Youtube video and it seems pretty simple.

    Advice?

If it is in fact the water pump, it could fail at any time and leave you stranded. It is relatively easy to change if you are handy. Double check that it is not the idler pulley, I had to replace mine on my 08 due to noise.

I changed mine using a non original Bosch part recently and it started leaking within a month. I would suggest getting a Toyota part. Online you can get them around $60 bucks.

I have hand tools and deep-well sockets. Plus ramps. Is it possible to do this from the top only? Any pitfalls I should avoid?

The trick will be to remove the air from the system after you replaced the pump. I might take some coaxing and several attempts because of complexity of the coolant loop (thermos, electric pump for heater etc.) Make sure you run through several cycles from cold to fully warmed up.

Yes, you can do everything from the top - as long as don't have forearms like Popeye. It's a fairly tight space.

Like alekska said, the trickiest part will be to get all the air out when refilling the coolant. I didn't drain the entire system when I replaced the ICE water pump in my 05 Prius. I clamped the hoses to the heater core and to the coolant thermos tank and just drained the radiator and the engine block. Some coolant will also be released from the block when you remove the water pump even after draining the radiator and block. I added a little less than a gallon of 50/50 premix SLLC after replacing the water pump.

If you don't have one, buy or rent a spill-free funnel (Lisle 24680). Using one will make it much easier to refill the cooling system.

Total cost for the water pump, drive belt (if you need one), spill-free funnel, and SLLC coolant should be about $125. And, make sure to buy an Aisin water pump (WPT-111 from Amazon).

Thank you! Will I need to get standard sockets or will deep-well sockets fit down in there?

I think you will benefit from having available a 10 mm standard socket as well as a 10 mm box/open end wrench.

In case you haven't already seen my post on this subject, here is a link:
How to replace engine coolant pump and thermostat | PriusChat

The correct Toyota engine coolant pump costs $56 plus shipping, here:

I would advise against installing a no-name substitute that is manufactured in China. However, the Aisin-branded pump available on amazon.com looks like a reasonable alternative.
Consider the possibility that the noise is coming from the idler pulley, not the engine coolant pump. After you remove the serpentine drive belt, rotate by hand the engine coolant pump pulley as well as the idler pulley, to see which feels "rough".

Its not safe to ignore the noise because the bearing may catastrophically fail.

Will do. Also, I need to get this done right away so I am going to Autozone for the pump (I know it's less than ideal).

Some of the pictures on Autozone's site show the pump with a triangular piece and some show a round plate for the pulley. Is there a difference?

It doesn't matter as long as the pump pulley will fit on the new pump.

Wrenched on it for a while and started rounding pulley pump bolt heads. Shopped it. Wave $350 good bye.

How did this happen? Did you not have the proper socket?
