aren't all of those named mid size SUVs also just 5 seaters like a C (maybe a little more comfortable than a C, but 5 is 5).

You're going to put yourself in a bad financial situation for barely any gain in trade-off.

If you do a trade in, dealers probably won't even give you the full 17k that you still owe on it, so you're gonna add that on top of the used SUVs price + you probably won't get a good APR, since it's a used car + paying trade in car's payment + the gas it'll be whoring will be quite a disadvantage just for a little more room for passengers.

You have kids and all, hopefully talk with the hubby about trading cars for now, before making any big financial decisions

No those all have the third row seat option or as with the Acadia- it is standard. My problem with the C isn't necessarily the amount of people but the amount of stuff I need to get into the car. We can't all four ride in the C anymore (for more than very short distances) because with the car seat turned backwards- my knees are jammed into the dashboard and there is no way that I can drive because hubby won't fit there at all. Also when it is just myself and the two kids travelling to my parents house, I can not fit all the stuff that has to go with a baby when we travel because there is simply not enough room. I have to pick and choose what can go and what can't. When it was just the older daughter, myself and my husband, it was absolutely no big deal because we could drop part of the backseat if we needed to... now that isn't an option. We took it to Florida and everything and was able to get everything in it. My husband has an SUV but it has 215,000 miles on it and we can't take it out of town because it is starting to fall apart. (the last time we did we got stranded in Alabama..) He refuses to get rid of it until it quits though and I don't know if that will be next week or three years from now. So I had kept hoping that his would quit and then I could keep mine and he could get something new but that doesn't seem to be happening anytime soon. :( So my only other option is to get something a little bigger. I completely agree with you about that it will be more financially and I will MISS the mpgs!!! But in the two years that I have had my car.. I have managed to pay off all my other bills, thanks partially in part to the lower car payment that I had and also to less money for gas so I can afford to go up a bit per month in car payment. I know what monthly payment I am comfortable with and refuse to spend more than that. So if I find something that fits my needs in that range, I will consider it, and if I don't- I will still be saving money driving my C for a while. Plus I have been paying a little extra a month on it so I pay off another thousand about every 2 1/2 months.- And I am going to try very hard not to have to roll any of the C's negative equity into the new loan...as long as we are only a couple thousand apart, I will pay it out of savings. I qualify for a 2.39 APR used car loan which I thought was pretty good. And I like my car.. so if I don't get a deal I am comfortable with at the dealership, I have no problem walking away.
I do love all the input though. I think there is a wealth of knowledge on the board which is why I asked you all about selling it myself in the first place. :)

Have you looked into a regular Prius (liftback) or the V? Take everyone and all of baby's things to the dealer and do a test fit. The legroom numbers aren't much different between the liftback and C, but there could be other factors that make the space work better. You'll for sure have more cargo room, especially with the V. You don't have to leave your good mileage behind for an SUV.

Yup. Reading her most recent post, it looks like she has one child too many for the C, and before that everything fit fine, so the liftback should be plenty of room. If another kid is in the future, the V would be better.

I got the C before I knew about the new little one. I was not a big fan of the look of the regular Prius or the V but liked the look of the C. Unfortunately in KY they are now saying they have to stay rear facing for two years....
But none of this really matters anymore- hit and run driver smashed and probably totalled my little C this morning. :(

Yes other than a sore knee- I am fine. Luckily I had already dropped off the baby at daycare. Never saw the guy coming... He completely blew a stop sign going full speed and slammed me and kept going. Doubt they will ever find him. MissC apparently has terrible luck!

Good news I found the truck that hit me... And it had insurance. Crappy insurance but surprisingly had insurance and his little butt went to jail.

I knew he had to live in that area somewhere because some guys from the business up the street said that they seen that truck in the area frequently. So for a couple of mornings before I went to the office, I drove around the area looking. I turned up an alleyway and spotted it behind a storage shed. I snapped a picture of the tag and called the police. They came out and we looked at it. Still had the blue paint from my car on it even though it was obvious that they had cleaned it up some because it had to have had pieces of my car stuck in it and that was all gone. He admitted to hitting my car and said that his foot had "slipped off the clutch" - whatever

Glad to hear you're okay. Cars can be replaced.

When we were cross shopping similar vehicles we also included the Highlander hybrid. IIRC the 2008+ AWD model could be had at a reasonable price, but it was a little like finding a needle in a haystack. We were searching 100+ miles out at the time.

Best of luck with whatever you do.

I will definitely look into that silverone! Skylis- at first they tried to say they were going to fix it but ended up totaling it out. The A pillar was demolished, the D pillar was twisted, apron had to be completely replaced, among a bunch of other stuff. :(

Doesn't sound like getting rid of the C and replacing it with a mid-size SUV is a good idea, from a financial perspective. Your husband already has an SUV, albeit with 125k miles, but it still runs and if he won't get rid of it, then use it to travel in. If you put a little money into it, which is a lot less than the amount you would lose to trade the C, it should provide many more miles of reliable use. You owe too much on the C right now and sounds like you paid about $24k OTD ($17.5k payoff + $6.5k paid down?) - a little high and likely not much down payment (the amount saved on gas while using it justified the purchase?). A better alternative to replacing the C is to buy a used mid-size SUV to replace your husband's SUV.

  19. Well at least that will speed things up a little. I was just curious if you had gap insurance. I have no idea if you've got it covered (is gap required in KY? some states don't require it), but I ask since what you're going through just brings back to me a lot of memories of what I went through when I lost Skylis 1.

Jhinsc-I would agree that would be financially smart. I did get it for 24k OTD- I didn't think it was high considering I had to special order it to get the options I wanted. But anyways... Doesn't really matter anymore..
Skylis-I didn't. Gap insurance is not required in KY and I had never had a bad wreck before so I never realized how helpful it could be. My next loan will probably be with State Farm bank (they have great rates right now) and it comes wih free gap insurance. I was lucky this time. I ended up coming out of it with my loan paid off and then some.
