How do you get such great mileage! I'm new to this (300 miles on my new Prius and average is about 48 if I add up all the bars that have gone by!) I try to drive watching the power shifts but it seems like the more I focus on that, the worse my mileage is! Share your secrets?

actually the objective to good mileage is to moderate ANY changes in speed as much as possible. i use CC a lot, mostly because the routes i take i try to take the routes that are the flatest (or the steepest to get the major elevation changes over with as quickly as possible). also it takes time to learn your Prius. i think you will find that everything you do affects the Prius much more than a normal car. the steering is sensitive, the gas is sensitive and the brakes are too. regen levels can change a lot by how you brake. i found that light braking pressure over longer periods of time give a better overall charge and you would be surprised at how much charge you can get with even the slightest amount of detectable drag.

this place is chocked full of tips. just the other day, jonathan (tideland Prius) mentioned that he does not turn on heat for first 5 mins of his commute. he waits till the engine is warm first so it doesnt waste gas. not sure how much gas is used or saved, but it does make sense. lucky for me, its rarely extremely cold.

Just read a comment by Darrel and how he "installed" and now uses the "EV"mode. Is this an option? Something you use?

The "B" position is interesting and I find I am experimenting more with that. I'll "keep my eyes peeled" as you suggest. BTW, your comment about how evertying influences mileage, I was just thinking that things like added amplification for the stero and the seat heaters I added in are probably mileage tags too! Whoa - should have read these first!

i use forced EV mode for the last ½ mile or so of any trip that i know i will be stopped for an extended period of time. the reason is that if the Prius needs to burn additional gas to warm up, i'd rather it also be charging the traction battery too.

How do you put it into "forced EV mode"? I could not find anything on this in the manual or by looking at the controls on the car.

guys, please take this EV discussion elsewhere, this thread is specifically dedicated to CAN-View Software updates. If you'd like me to split the thread where you started the EV discussion I will...just PM me tonight. Otherwise I'm going to delete these non-topical posts.

This is a better place for this discussion. The EV mod is not the place to start. There are a number of threads and articles that will help you all the way up to 110 mpg for a full tank (yes it has been done).

This describes a bit how the computer control works in the Prius:
