Ok - just got back from my Toyota dealer and they did replace the FOB. Here is the deal - and now I know why they call it a Key / Fob. He said if it was not in warranty it would have cost about $270 for the Fob. He said the key in the fob is an additional $130. So, in my case where they just replaced the FOB it would have been $270. However, if you lose the entire thing and want both the fob and the key in the fob replaced it is $400 smackers. The entire process took 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Hey 2 donuts later and two cups of coffee later I am a satisfied - if not slightly unhealthier customer. This dealership seems pretty good. They will shuttle you home and return to your home and pick you up if you are 5 miles or less from the dealership. I am. However, I have not used that service. If they do a "major" service (30K, 60K 90K??) they give you a loaner for the day. They will also give you one loaner a year for any other reason.

So now I am using the FOB that was my backup fob as my primary fob. Logic is if I got a bad batch of fob's I want to flush it out when it is under warranty. The new fob they gave me today is now my backup fob.

    Regards

    Rob

PS - regarding the post from mmmodem about a "low battery" warning on the display - I never saw one. Does not necessarily mean it did not display - I just did not see it. I do generally look at the display when I shut 'er down so that I can see the MPG for that trip. Therefore I really don't think I ever got the warning???

Being an overkill kinda guy, maybe I'll be adding a spare CR1632 3v battery to the glove box at the end of year one.

don't forget, you can still get into the car and start it with a dead fob battery, no biggie. and fwiw, you can have a metal key cut at a hardware store for $15., shows you what the dealers are making to pay for those donuts.

    Can Cr2032 replace Cr1632?

    In: Batteries [Edit categories]
    Answer:
No, they are not the same size. CR2032 is 20mm in diameter while CR1632 is 16mm in diameter.

According to the above,2032 is 4mm (5/32") larger in dia. Looking in my FOB, the 1632 fills the space. It does not 'look' like the larger diameter battery would fit. But I did not take the time to try one. If someoe has use a 2032 in their FOB, let us know.

If by "número uno", you are referring to how early one got their PiP, I am also pretty close to número uno (March 2012; see tag on my profile), and I haven't had any fob problems. My wife and I each have one of them.

    Charles,
    Very cool early adopter! :)
Are the very first PiP owner(s) on Prius Chat? Do we know them. Charles has to be close, right?

Depends upon what you call a early adopter.
john1701a was really early, late march I think. He is on here all the time. Go to his web site. He has all kinds of information there.

My PiP was the first one sold in the US (maybe even the Western hemisphere, hahah)

#2 was LurkAzuza.. she's here, do not know if she still visits

The first boatload of PiPs from Japan landed in Nor Cal first.. the first ones on US soil were in Fremont, I think? where ever that shipyard is.. but Toyota (Erica) didnt want to release them until she had a chance to inspect them.. since she's at HQ in Torrance, I guess she didnt get to inspect them until the ship arrived in Long Beach. Carson Toyota is literally down the street (ok, freeway) from Long Beach, so after she "released" them, Carson Toyota got the first truck load of PiPs in the US.

My green sticker is #1 but Lurk's is #0.. which I could never figure out.. I mean, really.. who starts numbering at zero..

I took delivery on March 1, 2012. I tracked the boat carrying it on its way from Japan to the port in Vallejo (near San Francisco) (Toyota provided the required information). But there may be folks here with experience with the pre-production prototype. And I don't claim the deeper experience with technical details that others have. Unlike those folks, I have never hooked up my own OBD-II dongle. :)

Whoa Charles. TMI on hooking up with your dongle or what have you. I understand there is a lot of room to do, well whatever (with your whatever) in the back of a Prius, but this is a family forum, OK? :ROFLMAO:

Poor attemps at humor aside, congrats on your 3/1/12 delivery. Talk about anxiously tracking a shipment!

I recall getting a March 1st delivery date when I preordered my PiP a couple years ago. I recall being number 47. We canceled when rumors of layoffs at DW's company loomed. When she was actually laid off a few months later, we were content knowing we made the right choice. Then FIL's 4runner gave up the ghost as Toyota introduced deep discounts and I finally got my number... I have no idea what number it is.

Back to the subject. The low key battery alert is accompanied by an audible tone so you can't miss it. I think it is wise to try to wear out the other original fob just in case it is the problem.

I might still be number one for something. First PiP fob to legitimately run out of battery?

Our garage is directly underneath bedroom, and key fobs are about 10-12 feet vertically over the Pip.

Haven't had a problem in 22 months, but will probably change fob batteries soon for good measure.

I had changed the fob batts in the gen II at 3 years just for good measure as well.

btw, I don't use the remote door open or lock buttons; might that have something to do with premature battery loss?

90% of the time my fob does not either. I lock by "pinching" the door handle or using the lock button on the door as I get out. But then there are those occasional (10%) times where I walk away from the car and think "did I lock the car"? in which case I reach into my pocket, hit the lock button on the fob and listen for the single "beep" telling all is well.….

I just looked at my purchase agreement, and it is actually dated February 29, 2012, so I can say I have been a PiP owner since February, 2012. I cannot find the threads right now, but but we tracked the car carrier ship from Japan, and noted when the cars were unloaded at Vallejo and spent time at a Toyota facility near the port having the final nation-specific factory work done, before being loaded on a truck to be sent to my dealer. Every time I drove on the freeway that connects Vallejo and Milpitas, I would wonder if my car was on that truck. So on that Wednesday, I got a call from the dealer that it was in, and I could pick it up that evening. Filled out the paperwork, wrote a check, drove it home, and plugged it in for its first charge.

I think it was the same ship that continued on to Long Beach, where Tracksyde's car came in.
