A week or two ago my touch screen stopped working.

When I first noticed it, it was responding to touches but at the wrong spot. Seems like it pressed a few inches to the right of where I pressed. For example, when I tried to press the "Energy" button on the consumption screen, it actually pressed "Reset". D'oh!

A few minutes later it wouldn't even do that. Now about the only response I can get is if I press really far on the left edge, it seems to do the button that is there. (That is, I can manage to press the "Energy" button if I squeeze my finger up against the left edge of the screen.)

I hoped it would reset itself when I turned off the car and turned it back on again, but no luck.

I have an appt for Monday to have it looked at (and get my 5000m service done).

Check your owner's manual, there is a way to recalibrate the touch screen that shouldn't require you to go to the dealer, and it sounds like that's all you need. But I don't know what would have caused it to drift so badly. Check under "Menu" on the sides of the touch screen, I think you'll be able to navigate from there.

I spent a half-hour looking through the owner's manual. Either the information on recalibrating is not in there, or I'm really stupid. (Hope it's not the latter!)

I did notice that there appears to be a small hairline crack towards the left of the display. I don't know how that could have happened -- nothing has ever hit the display.

I guess there's a good chance that has something to do with it. :(

    AAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

i tried turning my car on and off a bunch of times. then touched around the screen and found that indeed there were a couple of hot spots but they did not match up to the on-screen buttons.

but then, i looked more carefully, and MY SCREEN HAS CRACKED TOO! and my car has just been sitting in the yard for the past week.

could this have happened from the heat of a closed car? it's not even in the sun all day long! guess i'm gonna find out how good dealer service is around here...

On the plus side, the replacement screen will offer you Energy/Consumption toggling from the steering wheel. Kinda wish mine would crack so I'd get the new feature :-P

i HAD energy/consumption toggling from the steering wheel. i found that out while playing on the drive home. guess since mine is new. actually i still have it, since that doesn't require a touch button to work, just the steering wheel control.

but thanks for trying to make me feel better...

But, that's only on a car with NAV, correct?? I have a BI (6), no NAV, that I just picked up, built 6/04, and it has no such feature or button on the wheel.

    dead touchscreen unit available?

If anyone gets a warranty replacement on the touchscreen, see if
you can keep the dead one. I'd like to tear it apart to see if there
are wires inside we could tap into to fake out the "I agree"
soft key on the nav option.
    Thanks.

Just a guess, but I imagine that under warranty replacement, Toyota would want all the faulty parts back, especially on new models like the 04s so they can send them to the QC engineers to examine and see if it was a manufacturing error, or a design defect that needs to be corrected.

    Re: dead touchscreen unit available?

There probably are not "button wires" that can be faked. What gets sent to the ECU is some analog voltage value that the ECU then converts to coordinates where the screen was touched. This is then mapped by software to the button being displayed.

Since it appears that the display still works, all that is busted is touch sensitive surface of the display.

My son had a similar problem with his Palm with big ugly cracks. That was fixed by just replacing the top glass, which is the touch sensitive surface.

So, on the upper right side of the steering wheel on your #6 there's, well, nothing? Just a continuation of the silver plastic?

gee, i hate to bring this discussion back to the title of the thread :D ...

i took my car to my local dealer today, with the exact same problem described above... touch screen buttons don't work except all the way to the left side... and a hairline crack in the plastic.

the service rep said that 'he will have to ask' if this is covered under the warranty because there is 'physical damage'...

    grrrrrrr

That's right - nothin' but a continuation of the plastic. As a matter of fact, my owner's manual contains no information or photos, diagrams, etc., of the NAV system. Looks like Toyota has put out 2 different owner's manuals; one for NAV cars, and one for cars without NAV.

They have a separate manual for NAV functionality. Same size, shape, color, etc., as the owner's manual but much thinner...........still contains the same level of obtuseness apparently required by the federal authorities for owner's manuals, though. :)

If the issue is the same, you might want to get ahold of the other owner to have Toyota correlate both repairs. Perhaps there's some issue they need to address.

Do you know what the interior temp was getting to? Maybe it's worthwhile leaving one of the windows down a hair if it's safe to do so to avoid the super-high temps caused in a totally sealed car?
