BTW. It is possible that the leak is not from the immediate area that has been fixed. It may be from some further minor damage (small crack in a seam) that has not been yet detected.

yeah. seems to be the case. we did see that it was running along the back by the 12V battery....

anyway, we have an appointment set up first thing next week, and they'll be providing a rental. I am thinking I might still ask for a detailing to get rid of the smell, but for now, I'll just take it a day at a time... figures it was scheduled to rain for the next several days. I've got a fan set up in the garage to dry it out overnight... obviously it'll just get wet again tomorrow, but I'd rather get the smell gone.

I kind of figured the "oily-ness" was from the soapy water from the car wash marinating in spare tire.

they said they were just going to remove all the trim, and stick it in their shower and figure out where the leak is... so yeah, could be anywhere... could just be a bad gasket on one of the tail lights...

My last car was repaired at body shop. Ended up with a lot of water under spare tire. Turns out they always remove head/tail lights when they paint. They had reinstalled the tail light but there was a maple tree helicopter stuck under the gasket.

Long story short definitely suspect the tail light gasket.

In snowy areas many car washes have an "under body spray" that directs high pressure water up under the car to, theoretically, wash the salt off.

so, just got it back. said it was a body panel seal below the right tail light (which makes sense given where the water was coming from). Will wait a day or two, take it back through the carwash, and see what happens.

    Here's hoping!
