Tried this today... got the random numbers, but no response from my gas gauge. I still have one blinking bar.

    UPDATE

    ;)

-Unplugged the battery, no response to my gas gauge.

-Got 3 gallons in my tank today. It was warmer today around 54 degrees.

-Screen keeps telling me to add fuel

-Tried to calibrate, got the random numbers, but no change in my gas gauge.

-Rotated tires, and checked all fluids.

Do you guys know of any fuel or gauge fuses that need to be checked or any fuses or sensors that might be involved?

Gas neck or head? Floater? Bladder?

Thanks for all the help! :D

    Have to ask two questions.

    1. Since you initially added fuel and noticed the problem, how far have you driven until you added fuel again?
    2. What is the most amount of fuel you have ever added at one time since you took ownership?

At this point you've pumped 9 gallons, and you've disconnected the 12V battery for a few minutes. Upon reconnection, make the Prius READY. If you don't find that the fuel gauge registers a correct reading after several minutes have passed, then it is time to visit your local Toyota dealer for help. It could be that the fuel level sensor has failed, the wiring harness is bad, or the combination meter has failed.

    I logged a few bit...
    1/21- 5 1/2 gallons added
    Drove 50 miles
    1/22- 1 gallon added
    1/22- drove 48 miles
    1/23- drove 28 miles

    Finally usd my ODO

    did not record dates

    Added a few hundred miles.

added a few gallons every 2-3 days, just to make sure I didn't run out. I drove approx. 50 miles a day for a couples weeks now.

I would say the most I've traveled without fueling is around 250-300 miles.

Also one question My manual and other source are unclear as to what gas works best in my Prius, what do you use?

    87 Octane Regular Fuel

I think you need to make a trip to the dealer. You have tried and exhausted pretty much all the methods here on PC. Next step would be to ask the dealer to diagnose the problem.

Patrick Wong mentioned this earlier in this string, and at this point I concur with his statements. Sorry that I can't be of better assistance. It is pretty obvious that there is a mechanical failure and that repairs or replacement of parts are in order to solve your problem.

Please let us know what the final resolution is.

Use 87 octane, regular fuel as mentioned above.

No, because the cost depends upon what is wrong. Plan to spend in the high-three digits.

I just wish we could go back to the horse-and-buggy days. The horse needs fuel, you feed it, voila; no fuel sensor, combo meter, etc to worry about. But about those emission controls...

If you feel that way, maybe you should buy a car from the 1960s since the only emissions control would be a PCV valve. However most of those cars are not particularly reliable when compared to modern vehicles, for example consider engine and transmission life. You would be lucky to hit 100K miles without having a major problem. And the fuel economy would not be anything to write home about.

Oh, and if you have a frontend accident you'll be impaled by the steering column. Other than that, its all good.

    Sorry for the late reply.
I mean the electric contacts of the float sensor inside the tank.
    BTW what is your progress?
    Regards.

I've posted an update at the beginning of my thread
Found some diagrams and detailed workings of the gas neck and bladder, trying to figure out where sensors are and if I can fix this myself, or at least diagnose the issues

This is why having your Location filled in is so important to the best answers.

(I have no interest or knowledge of these parts or vendors, but they seem relevant)

i see his location as virginia......

what if the dealer he bought it from or the previous owner topped off the tank too many times and got fuel outside of the bladder thus reducing its capacity...????

If fuel was outside of the bladder, but inside the metal tank where the bladder exists, a DTC code would be set as the system is monitored for leaks that are built into the system.

I don't think this has anything to do with the OP's problem. It is obvious that one of the components in the system is malfunctioning, but until it is properly diagnosed it is best guess.

I am not aware of a drain of any sort.
