If you do take I-95South in Bronx to GW bridge, get ready for parking lot traffic. Take local roads if you can.
I live in Flushing now, and it's not that bad.
Just shoveled myself a parking spot in the street. Neighbors even helped, didn't know I had such great neighbors.
Hopefully I can pay it forward by shoveling for someone this week.

I live about 8 miles north and west of Ft Lee. Pseg is my provider, and it's about .17 a KWh combined generation and delivery.

Can someone please explain what the generation vs delivery charges are?

It's like paying a certain price for a new car, and then having an additional charge they call the "delivery fee". The fuel and the power plants cost a certain amount of money to generate the electricity, and then there is infrastructure that must be paid for to deliver it to your home, and significant losses through the lines.

It's not all rolled into one per kWh rate?

I mean, I assume you have some standard fees, but those shouldn't be rolled into your per kWh rate.

Holy crap that's confusing! They need to take some marketing classes and just show one general per kWh charge and then direct people where to look if they want to see the breakdown. That is just insane.

    My bill has 4 lines.
    1. The kWh's used (and the subsequent charge)
    2. The flat facility charge
    3. The flat city dividend charge
    4. The sales tax charge

5 if you count the total as another line :)

Your solution runs into a problem -- the bill appears to show that the customer may choose among several energy providers, or ESCOs. So the bill needs to separate the energy charge from the delivery charge so that customers can shop around. This is likely mandated by the state.

That choice is not available over here, yet.

I also see that the bill displays an estimated meter reading, not a real reading. The few times my utility has used an estimate when the meter reader could not get here on schedule, it has been way off.

Post Enron, California regulated that utilities must separate out energy charges from utility charges. The idea was to break the connection between consumption and utility profit. It has worked amazingly well, in that CA utilities are not opposed to conservation and consumption per capita has decreased.

Hooray for transparency -- the only real antidote to corruption and unbridled capitalism.

Here in NJ the government has deregulated the untily industry, we can now chose our own untily to provide us the generation portion of our electric and gas, they figure the competition will bring the consumers lower prices. The savings are small, I chose to stay with PSEG, the company I worked for, for 42 years.

In our city there is only one electric company. And I believe it is a quasi-government company and/or a non-profit.

Here on Long Island we can choose the energy provider for both electricity and natural gas.
So in both cases (electric and gas) you can get a semi-decent deal on the actual energy, but... the old utility still "delivers" (via overhead electric transmission lines and underground gas pipes) the energy so they sock you for as much as they can for the "delivery" charges.
It's to the point where the "delivery" charges for both gas and electric are higher than the actual "supply" charges and you can't choose or change the delivery company like you can choose/change the supply company. So in the end- we're still at the mercy of the old utility company :(

I've already told my wife that when considering our next house (which will probably be our last) the ability to utilize solar will be a major consideration in the buying decision. I'm sick and tired of these utilities sticking it to us every time the economy tanks...

Ouch I just looked at your electric bill, pretty high, I'm on the budget, which means I pay the average of yearly use every month, helps save off the shock of extreme weather.

Do they charge you just a bit of premium for that service?

No premium for budget your bill, every Nov. they re adjust, if you used more then you have to pay the balance, if you used less, they put it to you're next month or months bill.

Note also, that bill is for an estimated reading, i.e. nobody actually looked at the meter that month so a guess was put in. It is way out of line compared to prior months. It is very likely to shrink sharply once someone actually looks at the meter.

Also, during previous months it looks like no one was home - very little energy use comparatively.

I posted to show how the delivery, supply and other fees are broken out and the true cost of electricity.
