Solutions for gas pumping issue?

As indicated there are some previous posts on this subject. I believe this is different than the cold bladder problem that may reduce the volume of a complete fill up. There are two suggestions that I recall. One was to lift the hose to be sure the vapor recovery portion did not contain overfill from the previous user. Supposedly, lifting the hose drains any residual gas that might cause early shut off. The second was to turn the nozzle over while filling. I have had this problem occur exactly twice in about 18 months. The first time I was clueless and just spent 10-15 minutes to short pump 6 gallons in an empty tank. The second time, I did both of the above and was able to fill the tank without further problem (except struggling to keep the nozzle inverted). I haven't had the problem for quite some time so maybe bladder seal in the fill tube loosens over time, reducing the problem.

 

Oh, I've heard of the inconsisten volume fill due to the bladder temperature thing. That's not what I'm talking about here! I'm talking about consuming six gallons, and then having the nozzle click off after every 0.01 gallons that go in. And click again and again and again.

Thanks for the suggestions from others. I'll try the hose lift and upside-down trick next time!

 

Oh, OK. I don't seem to have that problem filling it. My wife's Windstar does at the beginning. I use the hose lift too, it seems to help. Filling it slowly helps as well.

 

This has NEVER happened to me. Maybe it's the Colorado pumps, or whatever. I always just put the nozzle in part of the way, put the fillup as high as it will go, and let her rip. Pull it out when it stops.

I'm out of there so fast the SUV drivers can't believe it.

I think using the pump at full pressure is supposed to help expand the bladder and allow a more substantial fill. It worked for me at the last fill up in VA.

I'm having this problem with my new 2006 Prius. The pump shuts off after 2-3 seconds. I've filled the tank four times and the problem isn't any better.
This is very frustrating, as you can imagine. I'll try turning the pump upside down and see if that works.

I had the problem on my 1st two fills and last time I put the it in with the handle pointed at the 9 Oclock position, seemed to work just fine.....

I live in Oregon where we are to dumb to pump our own gas also. I sneak across to Washington and fill my own tank when I can. I estimate when I fill my own tank I usually get 2 to3 more gallons in and I don't run it over. The people who pump gas here won't run the pump on slow and they usually yank the nozzle out the first time it clicks off so they can get back to their cell phone conversation.

 

<_< Far as I can tell, there's no TOTAL SOLUTION to the Prius bladder, fuel pumping issue. Over 20,000 miles fueling my Prius has become more predictable and the Dallas summer heat has helped, perhaps relaxing the bladder a bit.

Some forum members have reported some success by filling until the pump clicks off, then withdrawing the nozzle completely (allowing the bladder to 'bleed' off some trapped air), reinserting the nozzle and slowly pumping more fuel in. I usually pump slow until the click off and follow that procedure once.

WORKS FOR ME....

 

I experienced the premature shutoff issue on about the 4th or 5th tank in our '06 Prius the last time I tried to fill it up. I'm glad I found this thread so I have some more tips to try when it happens next time.
