Much of Calif is on a tier system. At one time there were 5 tiers (1 costing about 6 cents & tier 5 as high as 40ish cents/kWh) ... now there are 4 tiers, and the utility is working it (to their advantage of course) to bring the billing under just 3 tiers. Not so in NY? Reason I bring it up ... if you think it's hard to calc the cost of juice due to TOU billing ... try throwing tierd rates into the equasion.

So am I making changes to the database? ;) I knew this would be a difficult topic (hence me posting it asking for input), but am open to make changes to it while we still have a small data set.

Maybe I need to create fields for most of the entries on the bill (supply cost %, supply flat fees, delivery cost %, delivery flat fees), I just need to make sure everyone calculates it the same way, or it's useless.

EC, In the list for ESCOs there are many more than the ones you had listed. You may want to make it so an ESCO not listed can be entered. For instance, my ESCO is NYSEG Solutions where I am on the 100% green plan. Just a thought.

I closed the account and I don't have access to prior month statements. When we packed up, we may have thrown out old statements. I think last month supply rate was around 20 cents per kWh.

    Thanks for checking.

The large changes in cost/kWh must mean that the utility is bundling fixed charges into the supply charge/kWh. No wonder you tend to report the way you do.

It also explains why the deregulation in NYS is pretty much a bust. The lion's share of the charges are fixed, and hidden in delivery charges. I was reading anecdotal stories from people in upstate who reported that of a $100 bill, $25 was for the fuel and $75 fixed charges. Crazy. For people like us that conserve fuel the cost/kWh becomes even more outrageous, as your 6 day total bill demonstrates quite nicely.

I know comparing bills across the country is a bit of a fool's errand, but the differences between NY and my state of NM are hard to just chalk up to locale differences. I pay 10 cents a kWh, and a $5 fixed charge monthly. So even though I usually use ~ 100 - 125 kWh a month, my total bill is around $15 - 20 a month when taxes are included. Source fuel charges do not differ a whole lot from state to state, but fixed charges vary tremendously.

All in all, I agree with you: your old utility sucks eggs. Not only because the rates are so high, but because they are part of the fixed charges. It is SO anti-conservation. Home energy production with net metering is the cure Vs. that utility.

Last year, I posted my bill also. If I recall, the supply charge was about 11 cents per kWh, delivery was another 11 cents/kWh and the basic charge was like $15.

I am glad you see why we need to use total bill / kWh to get honest cost of electricity in area like NY.

The ESCO field is a text input field, you can enter whatever you want. The 'Utility' field is a drop down box, but those companies are known and listed on NY State's website, so I added them all in advance, none should be missing (but if there is, let me know).

Oh, that was never a bone of contention. I'm just saying that I now see why customers of your old utility have trouble or are frankly unable to answer the question "how much MORE on my bill for a plug-in if I know the extra kWh a month ? "

Addendum: a two equation set of linear equations would sweep away the confusion.
