engine water pump

    I've got a grinding noise coming from near my water pump. replaced the serpentine belt w no luck. it's got 212,000 miles one it so I'm guessing the water pump is going bad.

    anyone have any experience with the duralast water pump? it's $40 bucks so I figure I'd give it a try. any info would be great. thanks.

    The noise might not be coming from the water pump, it could be the idler pulley bearings. If you are going to take everything apart, replacing the water pump at that mileage is also recommended.

    You should try to get the OEM part, it sells on Amazon.com under AISIN water pump for Prius. It's about $44.00.

    Don't buy the duralast. Get an Aisin water pump instead, which is OEM. Get it at Amazon for $43.98 + free shipping. Amazon.com: Aisin WPT-111 Engine Water Pump: Automotive

    I spun the idler pulley and it wasn't clicking or anything. do dealers keep pumps in stock? if so how much do they usually charge?

    Yes the pumps should be in Stock, from $60 to $70

    You will need to get some super long life coolant too. That's about $22 dollars a gallon

    I just had one replaced with a water pump from Advance Auto Parts. I believe it was GMB brand. Lists for $39 with coupon code TRT30 (30% discount) it was just under $30.

    I just replaced the coolant two months ago. will all the coolant come out when I take off the pump?

    You don't want to end up short on coolant. If you live in a mild climate, you can possibly top off with a little distilled water. Air in your coolant loop can cause many problems. I would recommend getting a gallon of super long life coolant

    There can be lots that go wrong with a failed water pump. I wouldn't recommend a pump from China for your prius

    Yes. You can drain the coolant at the radiator drain plug and catch a gallon in a clean container, then reuse it. However you should still have a gallon of Toyota SLLC available if you need it.
    I agree with the recommendation that you purchase an Aisin-brand pump (Aisin is the original equipment manufacturer) if you don't wish to purchase a Toyota-branded pump. The Aisin pump is quite inexpensive and the quality and service life of the cheaper alternatives is questionable.

    Hint: Use a gear ratcheting 10mm wrench to get the pulley bolts off.
