Um .... why? Something seems wrong with yours?

How about you try Toyota rental cars through their dealers?

I can tell you right now, if your car is surging while driving on the highway, there is something wrong. It won't prove anything by driving another car. My Prius does not surge in any sense of the word.

How many miles are on the car? If it's an emissions related issue, it will most likely be covered under the warranty. My suggestion would be to bite the bullet and take it to the dealer.

47k its been to 2 dealers . there statement NO ENGINE LITE ON NO CODES everything is fine.
By somebody else that as same model and drives this car could tell me if it runs like there car...
Like I have told 2 dealers I can't believe all the 2012 3rd gen. prius run like this.
It surges. another way to but it its like running out of gas for spit second and then runs fine for 5-10 minutes and back again. It does it when your looking at screen with gas motor, elec motor batt front wheels. it does it when the red line goes in and out of batt.

just got off phone with Toyota headquarters for ahour and they inform me nothing they can do because 2 dealers state nothing wrong with it and no codes. So I info lady I guess I will take lemon law route.
All I have ask for is a tech or saleman or president of Toyota to drive car and they will feel it surging. My wife feels it sitting in passage seat. But they inform me theres nothing they can do ......so we will see with a attorney.
That's the reason I was just looking for somebody with same car to take this car for a ride and see if its me or something wrong. if its me I can't believe all the folks driving such a car with surging.

Do you actually feel the car is decelerating and accelerating within a second or two, or you just see the line line on the screen?

it does it from about 45-75 mph. going steady 50 mph for say 3miles at 50mph and all a sudden it will surge (1-2 seconds) and then again in about 30-45 seconds do it all over again. mph do not drop at all have tried cruise and same surge.
I can't remember whether its when the red line is going into battery or out of battery.
I'm going out tonight after dark to take video of screen while driving down road.
also my (big battery) never leaves full charge looking at it. dealer told me it should drop to about 75% and then charge back to 100%.. my stays peg at 100%..
I guess my dealer got word today, because my wife just got off phone with service manager asking to bring car into to check it out again.
so its set to go in next wedsday.
I guess another sample would be walking and then miss a step and then back to walking.

Well at least you're getting somewhere with the dealer. That's a good thing. Let's just hope the don't brush you off and say there is nothing wrong. The fact that the traction battery stays at 100% charge indication is definitely not right. Sound to me there might be an inverter problem.

I really don't know. I just asked them each time to take it out on road and they would see what I mean.
Should the battery drop down to like 75% and then charge back up to 100% and back and forward.

If your traveling on basically flat roads the pack will never be full. Sounds to me like your feeling this when the ICE revs while dumping the extra charge? H

when your stating pack are you talking about the big battery I call it. that battery is always showing full charge at all times since I brought car 1 month ago. and yes this is on flat level road 9 miles from time I get on this road till I turn in to driveway. gas motor on the whole time and electric switching on/off to wheels and switching to battery on/off about every 5 seconds. like I explain to young lady today at Toyota customer service I would be dizzle watching red line go to battery and then to eclectric back and fore every 5-10 seconds I would be mixed up.
I believe its true that the ice revs up when its sending charge to battery correct.

Ok took a short trip to wawa and video the screen there and back.
as you can see battery never drops down always stays full charge by screen.
and the surge comes when the white line comes from battery to electric motor.
I hope the 2 videos are ok.
this is video going to store.
http://youtu.be/GkUI6buwLwQ this is video coming back from store and letting car warm up a little before driving home.

if you creep around a parking lot after it's warmed up, with your heat set to 'low', you'll see the battery drop way down from running in ev.

Looks like it's working normal to me. That battery is not fully charged. It still has another pip to go before it's peaked out. During normal driving that battery will hardly ever indicate 100% . About the only time it will indicate 100% is when you have gone down a long grade. Also, the surge you are feeling is the ICE kicking in. It is not completely seamless.

You say" surge" are you saying while the car is in motion, the car moves forward or drops in momentum a little extra that your body feels a surge, every so often?

Or are you mentioning surge about everything you see on the display and the feeling in the car has a moving forward feeling like any other car?

My battery hangs around the same level on your car almost all the time. I also see you have one more little bar to go up to go to 100%.

The big battery will drain down below your indication on the video at a few different conditions.

If the car is running moving forward say in traffic the battery will constantly be recharging from the ice and it does not drop in level, even when I see ev mode on my scan guage around the neighborhood slow speeds.

Your doing 8mph and the ICE is running. My Prius would be moving ev. without engine power. Was the engine cold? What mode are you using? ECO, Power or no mod. Is the car on cc when you feel the surge?

brought car used a month ago. 44,700 right now 45,900.

the surge is when car is moving. but its only felt at a steady speed say 53mph straight flat road 5 miles long it will give a surge back in seat and then be fine. it only last 1-2 seconds but it happens ready time its coming out of the battery. people of told me not to look at gauges and that does not change it either because I can still feel it.
you know how u would run out of gas in a lawnmower and it will surge and then pick up fuel for a second that's what it feels like in car. but its not running out of fuel.

I brought a obd reader for phone with torque but don't understand hopw to work that thing.

the mode is just normal. there is no differents in power or eco. car acts up
the car was warm coming back from store because I let sit there running (hoping somebody might want it) that's how bad I feel about this car..
and yes I feel I should be able to run long time on the ev without ice but it does run long before changing over to ice.

I'm surprised the Toyota dealer did not send a tech to drive with you to show him the issue.

For example: If the car made a noise on turns there are no codes and the tech would need to drive it to hear the problem to determine if it's brakes, steering, suspension etc.

Hey you can always use that excuse.

Issue: While driving straight a noise is heard at around 30 to 50 mph on slight turns. Than nonchalantly mention. "What's that surge? Did you feel it?"

    Two questions:
    1. What octane gas are you using?
    2. How cold has it been? The ICE will run just to keep the emission controls warm enough to work properly when it is below freezing outside.
