Hello, I have been trying to find a 2008 Prius, preferably under 90k miles, for blue book price ($10,300 KBB for 2008 Prius standard with 60k miles) I am a single mother of twins who works full time and is one class shy of being a full time college student. I have been looking for a Prius for over a month and was curious if anyone had any ideas. I would like to Avoid a dealership please, but am welcoming to any other ideas or suggestions.

Well hello fellow Alaska! What is your typical commute like? Did you try Craigs List? i have seen a few there.

I just bought a 06 with higher miles, because the main expensive hybrid battery pac has recently been replaced. The dealer wants too much mark up, and rarely keeps the privious owners maintenance records. Well if you buy below 90k, you should not have to worry about the hybrid battery right away. I would just look on craigslist and in the paper, worth spending money to have car inspected by garage before buying.
. Sometime it helps to look outside your area a little, maybe 50 miles away. It takes some time, good luck.

One more thing, JC on here said when I was looking, that KBB pricing can be actually lower than the actual value of a Prius.
I have owned my car 3 days, love it.

This only applies to a high mileage prius. If you are buying high miles, it would be beneficial to use kbb as a negotiating too. It's pricing structure is normally lower than the asking prices from sellers.

Ok dont kill me anyone for saying this, but is it really a good idea to buy a Hybrid in Alaska??? Everyone knows the huge mileage drop you experience due to cold weather..
I am down south and see people posting on here all the time from up north complaining about the winter time mileage drop. Even people in the south complaining about the drop they experience in the winter time. I cant imagine how that would be in Alaska...

I know your all die hard Prius fanatics here but where talking about a young single mother in school with 2 kids. She really needs to make the most out of her $.... So please UNBIASED OPPONIONS ONLY

First let me say I am not a Prius owner, heck the car in my profile pic is a 960hp V8 powered fire breathing beast.... I have been on this forum because I am interested in picking up a Prius C as a daily driver so I am not the most experienced Hybrid person on here. But I have seen many many post over and over this past winter about how the cold weather will cause your fuel mileage to drop. I have been following the Prius C and most people lose around 6-8mpg when the temp drops. I am just thinking that it might be best for her to pick up a non hybrid car.

Not to mention the fact that she is looking for a hybrid thats 6 years old, how much longer before the battery pack goes out and cost her..... what $2K to get a new one out of pocket??? (just a guess on that price)

I am just saying a Hybrid is a great choice for some people but not for everyone.

I have to agree. I own a 2010 Prius and a 2012 Camry. For the price difference and possible higher repair costs. You might be better off with a good used Corolla or Civic.

Flotowngtm, I suppose losing 6-8mpg in cold weather (50mpg - 8mpg = 42mpg city driving) is still better than a lot of vehicles on the road (y)

To the OP: its too bad you werent closer; in Michigan, the Prius are priced very attractively. Right now on Craigslist, theres an 08 with 80k miles for $8500, and a 2008 with 84k miles for $8900. Those are the asking prices too (I'd offer less, lol).

The good thing about Prii in Alaska, they can go right under a Moose on the road. ;)
No let's let Spiderman answer this but he keeps saying it's warmer in Anchorage that DC where we are 20F tomorrow and I suspect they have engine block heaters all over the place.

There are good points being made. I have a five year average of 47 mpg. but i also have a garage and 30 mile rt commute on the highway. my wife has a 11 rolla that has a 24 mpg three year av. she does short short errands.
with what we know from above, i might recommend an impreza awd. where she lives gets a lot if the wet snow.

Not sure where that photo came but probably no AK. That number is way low. In the MatSu that number is hundreds and is usually 300-500 by spring !

I agree, 4 cylinder AWD car would be much better in her case I would think. Good luck with whatever your decision is..
