OK, so I'm sitting home this afternoon and my neighbor is out working on his car. Mine is parked in its usual driveway spot. I hear a "honk, honk, honk"-style alarm system go off. I hate car alarms; they just make me wish that someone would steal the damn car and make it shut up. I assume it's my neighbor's car since he's working on his car with a buddy. (It's not a Prius.) The alarm goes away after about 5-7 honks, so I ignore it. A few hours later, "honk, honk, honk". It sound much closer to my house. It lasts alot longer this time  . I head outside just as it stops, and ask the neighbor if it's his. He says no, he thought it was mine. Okaaaaaay... except I have a 2005 package 4, which doesn't have the theft deterrent system, I thought

<_< hmmm. So out with my Prius file. Window sticker doesn't mention theft-deterrent system. Well, I'll check the manual. It does mention a honk, honk, honk theft deterrent system. As we all know, though, it also talks about nav and bluetooth, which I also don't have. In the manual it mentions that the theft deterrent system may go off if someone tries to unlock from inside (or through an open window) after the system is "set" or if the battery terminal is reconnected when the vehicle is locked. OK, well, I don't think any of these things happened. Daylight, quiet neighborhood, neighbor who can see the car from his driveway says no one was there....

So I am still trying to figure out if I even have this system, so I go through the "Testing the System" steps in the manual. I power up, open the windows, power down, lock it with the fob button, and put my SKS 30 feet away. I wait 30 seconds (as per the manual's walk up to the car, reach through the window and unlock the car. Nothing happens, which doesn't suprise me, since I DON'T THINK I HAVE THE THEFT-DETERRENT SYSTEM on a 2005 pkg 4.

So my question is... what the H***? Why would a non-existent system alarm malfunction (twice) for no reason. Yes, I'm 99% sure it was my car, as it was on the side of my house toward that neighbor, who heard it towards my house. No other cars parked nearby, no one elase out on the street... Does anyone have any insight into this? Thx.

In that case you should update your profile lol. It says Package #5!

Do you have a panic button on the SKS fob?

Toyota alarms last for 1 minute if untouched/unattended.

Wow, that's been a typo since day 1 on PriusChat. It is a pkg 4. I'll fix it...

Yes, there's a panic button, but the keys were hanging on a hook in the kitchen, so no one touched it.

Yes... the first thing I did after the 2nd alarm was to honk my horn and see if it sounded the same. And it does. And the same as the panic buton which I just tried, as well.

Hi!! I really hope you see this and can respond. I am having the exact same problem. I have a 2005 Mercury Mariner though. My keys are hanging up on the hook and around the same time every morning my panic button goes off. It was only happening in the morning at first but today it went of about 12 or more times. Finally I just am leaving it unlocked until I can take out the fuse for the horn, hoping that will help. Let me know if you got yours figured out!

Nothing like checking into PriusChat 4 years late! It was the 12V battery.
