Do you guys feel they dont respect the Prius on the freeway??? I always experience this whenever I drive on the fast lane or carpool lane...I''m driving 70mph and a car will tailgate me, if i cant move to the right I will speed up till i hit 80-90 and still tailgates me but whenever I move to the right and make them passed they will just slow down like 70mph...i think most of them hates Prius in front of them. But whenever I drive my V8 car on the fast lane like 70mph they dont tailgate me but on the Prius even 90mph they do!!!

That's the reason why I never get into the left lane of the freeway anymore. In Texas, we have trucks who like to be aggressive for the sake of being aggressive. I've been tailed in the far right hand lane by several of them while I was doing the speed limit with plenty of room to pass me in the other 3 lanes of the highway. I've noticed that with the hatchback, it looks like cars are closer to me than they were when I was driving the Camry, which provided a nice 2 ft. buffer.

I am retired, and I own my own time.

I just observe how stupid these people are to risk their lives with stress and tension just to think that they are saving a few seconds and are getting one over on other motorist.

I just drive at or near the speed limit on the right lane, while constantly trying to leave the greatest space between my car and these fools.

    Respect?

Who needs it from those whom a I perceive as like no more than cow pies in a barnyard?

They are just as what I expect them to be. I'm NEVER disappointed.

If you are driving 70mph in the fast lane you are going to get tailgated no matter what you are driving. That's why I stay in the slower lanes. I say speed on brother hell ain't half full.

I just love it, when I'm going the speed limit on a road in the right lane and when tailgater gets behind ne and lays on the horn.

Although, I am situationally aware of everything around me, I act like I'm dazed, slow down and look around like I'm startled just to irk the fool.

I them ignore him and just go on my way as I did before.

Hey! Having grown up on a farm-ranch, I must take offense at your attempt to demean cow pies. They are a very important and valuable part of the agriculture ecosystem. They are an important fertilizer that must be put back into the soil to maintain fertility to prevent loss of important resources.

Unlike road scum, cow pies have important positive value.
Don't act dazed. Put on a show of hyper-alertness, as if he warned of some otherwise undetected hazard ahead that you must avoid. And of course, because you aren't sure what hazard he is calling out, it is necessary to slow down.
This is the time for a 'reverse pass'. Change one lane to the left, let tailgater pass, then move back.

This has worked for me in all cars, not just Prius. So far, no one has ever changed lanes to continue tailgating.

Exactly, while the jerk thinks I'm startled and dazed, I am in the hyper alert mode.

If the jerk has room to pass, he will.

If he's a fool, he'll even cross a double yellow line on a curve to pass across oncoming traffic.

Here, in South Carolina, a lot of fools die this way.

Only problem is that they may kill a few innocents.

There is one or two of these on the local news almost every day.

I also had a Camry and I agree with you. In the Prius cars behind me look like they are an inch from my rear end. A very frustrating situation for me that I can not get used to.

I see this mentioned quite a bit on here which is interesting as I don't experience any more tailgating in my Prius than any other car here in the UK.
To further reduce reduce the occurrence of the tailgating that does happen here, it was made illegal around 7 or 8 months ago with the police being able to issue on the spot fines of £100 (c$170) and 3 points on the drivers licence (12 points = disqualification from driving)

Americans hold their right to drive like assholes more self evident than their right of free speech. I, for one, would be totally in favor of a point system.

Nope, never noticed this. Respect largely comes as a result of how you drive not what you drive. As a result people seem to act exactly the same around me whether in my Prius, our SUV, or our full-size work trucks.

I would have to say I think this phenomena exists.

I think given the reputation of "Prius" there are a percentage of people, drivers who when seeing one ahead of them immediately apply the "slow" stereotype. And with this there are a percentage of people who will do anything to NOT be following a Prius, regardless of the speed of the Prius itself.

I've been on the freeway, easily going with the flow of traffic, that is not slow, not fast, pretty much simply the speed of the majority, when I've been shocked when somebody will blow past me aggressively for no apparent reason.

This has never really happened to me with anything I drove in the past, It seems to happen from time to time with The Prius, and I can only think it is because of the idiocy of some drivers, coupled with the latent stereotype of what a "Prius" is that some limited people perceive.

But I also would say this, the people driving like this? Would be "jerks" and bad drivers regardless. The Prius just gives them an imaginary reason to demonstrate their bad driving skills.

Wait till the other drivers notice how much slower the updated Prius is. Can you say even more disrespect?
