My colleagues from New Jersey say weekend trips to Pennsylvania and New York are the norm for Jersey boys and girls. I can see neighboring state Tesla stores benefiting from this ban. I can also see independent Tesla service shops sprouting up in NJ.

How many Tesla stores were going to be opened in New Jersey ? 1 maximum right?
The Tesla is not banned from road use in New Jersey it is just a single dealership shut out for not conforming to local rules.

According to the Tesla website NJ has two showrooms and one service center:

The issue is that dealer associations in nearly all the states are pushing to ban Tesla's business by arguing that, potentially archaic, franchise protection laws should be applied to Tesla when Tesla has no franchise network that needs protection. Not sure of the details of how Arizona did it, but Texas passed a law doing so. North Caroline attempted to, but backed down. NJ used a regulatory body that shouldn't have had a say on Tesla to do so.

To be consistent I think NJ should outlaw Apple stores and make everyone buy phones at a store that also provides the phone service. This would protect consumers in many ways...such as knowing that there are other phones available on that network. [/sarcasm]

In austin, where tesla can't sell direct, there is a tesla store, and a tesla service center with supercharger. The store can show you the car, but can't sell you the car, you need to buy from the internet, and finance from tesla out of state or your own bank.

Do you pick the car up at the store in Austin after you buy? Or is it delivered to you?

Tesla delivers the car to the nearest service center, per their website. For those of us in South Jersey picking up the car in Norristown PA is closer than picking it up in Jersey. Not sure what they do if you aren't "close" to a Tesla facility.

For my father here in upstate NY, more than 200 miles from the nearest dealer, they are delivering it to his house - supposedly next week! Can't wait!

I thought that was good advertising ... maybe Nissan was afraid of retribution on the part of New Jersey politicians

There's a Nissan dealer right around the corner from the NJ Tesla service station. Maybe they're the guys that dropped a dime on Tesla. ;) :p

I was thinking it was not the first time Nissan had a second thought a retracted a PR tactic...but I don't even want to mention the first time.
