I have a 2006 with 155k miles. I took it into the dealer for a mini service this week. Drove home after the service was complete, then drove to work yesterday. On the way home an alarm sounded and the red triangle light with !, the break system light (O) with !, the VSC light and the engine CHECK light came on.

A friend used his scanner to read the error code for me and it reported a "p0a80" code.
What does this code mean? Replace the hybrid battery?

Any input on if this issue is likely to have been caused by something done (or not done) during the service?

Can I drive the car without causing more damage?

    Any info would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

Yes, that is what DTC P0A80 means. This is logged when the traction battery ECU detects a voltage difference between the 28 battery modules which exceeds spec.

If you continue to drive the car, you will soon find out that the car cannot be driven. This is not causing more damage, but the hybrid vehicle ECU will refuse to allow the power train to produce power. The traction battery will overheat when a module has failed.

So you should be working on a repair solution or plan to dispose of the car.

sadly you are just over the 150k CARB warranty if so you probably want to see what the dealer can swing with Toyota to help on repair cost especially since perception seems like maybe they did something wrong. Of course tact and good luck.

Just out of curiosity, what was the type of scanner your friend used?

I don't know. It was a hand held device about 3" x 6", with a connector that attached to a socket under the dash. I searched Amazon, and I think this is the one:

I have 2005 Prius with 118K miles on and saw the same alarms. Took it to dealer and dealer first charge me $400 for diagnostic and cleaning the hybrid battery fan housing and returned the car to me after resetting the alarms. (recommend save $400, cleaning fan after hybrid battery failure is waste of money). When I pick up the car, same alarm stay on. Complaining to dealer, they did diagnostic on hybrid battery and provided copy of battery diagnostic with battery block vol-v12 voltage is 15.78 while other battery block showed 16.89 -17.00 range. It appears that only one battery block failure can cause alarm. Dealer wanted $4600 to replace new hybrid battery (in state of DE). When I bought the Prius on 2005, dealer estimated new battery cost of about $2000. I guess lying to sell the car is more important for the Toyota dealer. Complaining to Toyota customer center (800-331-4331) did not help me and they confirmed the price for replacing the new battery of $4600 is reasonable (customer rep response). I am process of getting rebuild hybrid battery. Does any one know how the hybrid battery is rebuild? Are they only replacing bad battery block?

    Terry,
$4600 is not reasonable as my dealer in CT charges $3400 for a new HV battery installed. A rebuilt battery from a good vendor has a full set of low mileage, recent vintage salvaged modules that have been rebalanced (all 6 cells in the module at the same State-Of-Charge - SOC) and matched up with each other (All modules at the same voltage, have the same capacity and same pairwise Internal Resistance). Some good vendors (e.g. Dorman) give a 3-year warranty. My rebuilt battery from Dorman's predecessor company (ReInVolt) was installed 60k miles ago (over 2 years) for $2000 installed and is doing fine to date.

Terry that price sounds like a rip off (it's an easy DIY job anyway), but the idea of cleaning the HV battery fan is not such a bad idea. You really don't want to go to all the expense of getting a new/rebuilt battery and then have it fail again due to poor cooling!

BTW. Did they mention what type of state the fan was in? That's one of the advantages of doing it yourself, you get to see first hand what the condition is like and based on this you can judge how long to wait before doing it again. For most people I think cleaning the fan should be part of their regular maintenance schedule. I've found doing it at the start of every second summer works for me.

I am waiting for rebuild battery delivery. I asked but I was talking to maitenance rep instead of mechanic who performed the work. I will check the fan condition when I take the back seat and side panel remove. It will be few day...

Battery replaced. Dealer did clean the fan blade so I have no idea what the state of my fan. Contracted Technician mentioned the worst fan blade debris that he saw was on a Taxi with 200K mile.
