Good advice. I had to replace the motor in an otherwise-fine Tercel a few years ago, just because I ignored the oil stains in my driveway and never checked the level between changes. By the time I noticed the funny noise it was too late... that was one of my hard-earned lessons. I now make a point of checking oil levels immediately after an oil change and again after a couple of tanks of fuel. Probably should do it more often, but none of my current vehicles are losing any oil, so I've been a bit slack...

    I hate those hard-earned lessons.

That reminds me of the time I didn't think rotating tires was necessary... until I had square tires and had to shell out about $600 for a new set.
