Yeah i want to go to at least 2010 but have been out of work for 8 months or so.. so Im looking at fixing it or just put the to another 2008 or so with 100k miles or less.. might have to fish out 1.5 k for it aside from what the insurance gives.. but it would have a package 5 on it, as i didn't have any package.. so It would be very nice for me to have some bells and whistles

Avoid 2004,2005 - many thinks are improved after 2006.
Is better higher miles and newer year - like 2008-2009 at 150k miles, than 2005-2006 at 80k miles.
Battery goes bad not by the miles, but by the year and the temperature. I've seen many bad batteries at 50-60k miles and good at 280k.
2009 has ESC, which 2006-2008 does not have. I have no idea how exactly that will help, but probably is good.

Where did you hear this? I can't see an insurance company letting you have a car for $500 (or whatever your deductible is) that a junkyard will pay $3000-$4,000 for. The insurance company is not your friend - they make money off you and that's all the care about (actuarially, speaking).

If you can really purchase it for $500 buy the carcass, save the Hybrid Battery (easy) then sell the rest of the car to Steve at AutobeYours or someone closer to you. There is no way you will lose money. However, I agree with the poster above. The "buyout" should be more from the insurance company since they know the carcass is worth decent money at salvage auctions.

I'm curious; what is this ESC that you speak of, that is only available on the 2009 Prius but not the 2006 - 2008?

Are you referring to VSC (Vehicle Stability Control)? Or is this something else?
