Kinda hard to answer that first question. Don't know you personally. I could hazard a not-so-polite guess. But I won't. Too polite. :D

WHO said ANYTHING about CHALLENGING 6th graders in political discussions? Are you projecting? Do you commonly challenge 11-year olds? Maybe you could use some brushing up on your comprehension skills. Go back and read what's actually been written.

You guys see what you want to read to make some bogus point you want to make. No real discussion of the issues.

Actually politics DID surface when I was in the 5th grade, at the time of the Grenada conflict. I specifically remember a kid asking the teacher why we were there, thing is, unlike what's going on today, Grenada was far easier and more straight forward to explain (at least, on the surface). I seem to remember her answering him in a manner such that given his question, he should write to the President, and as such, turned it into a class project whereas we all wrote the President on whatever subject matter we wanted. There was NO SLANT whatsoever.

Then, it totally disappeared until a class called "Social Problems" in high school. It was a private school, so I'm not quite sure if public schools have such courses. Anyway, I specifically remember how the teacher in that class remained totally NEUTRAL, even through the Gulf War back in '91. That school chose a far better way to teach critical thinking within this respect, and "both sides of the coin", with a whole year of a debate-based English class. Topics were randomly chosen, and you were assigned to take up a position. Again, the instructor was more or less a ref. (e.g. the equivalent of Betty Boothroyd  ), and let the kids battle it out.

Then came college, whereas I took a political science course here and there... :p

My point is, there are FAR better ways to foster critical thinking/debating than politics. Particularly at such a young age.

I think you should refine YOUR writing skills. :p

Sure, it's pretty tough to challenge anyone that swallows your viewpoint, or gets it shoved down their throat.

These are 6th graders, how many of them have stood up in class, and said "No you're wrong because of (this, this, and this)!", and have upheld their position throughout?

...of course, if FACTS don't exist, I suppose it's all irrelevant right? FACTS MUST exist, just like evidence right? If we don't see the sky is blue because our eyes are always closed, then it must not be...

Well, notwithstanding, one thing is for certain, you'll make a LOT of friends on this site...

    ;)

No, my students stand up and say, in response to my asking their opinion, "I think ....." Sometimes they give reasons. Sometimes they don't and I ask "Why do you think that?" Sometimes they can articulate it, sometimes they can't completely. And then I repeat what they have stated so the rest of the class is sure to hear it, thank them for having the courage to express it, and I ask if anyone agrees with it or disagrees.
You guys hypothesize about what happens in a "liberal's" classroom, and then you rant about your conjecture, and you sound so silly doing it. And you're making less and less sense in the process.

I wish you'd tell your friends in the bush administration to deal with the FACTS. They're always trying to have the US public believe in their fantasyland. Fortunately, fewer and fewer are continuing to buy it...

I would have to agree with watts..

But will also state it doesnt matter whos in the oval office they all make promises that can't be kept to get there and then try and run the country the way they would like to..

Teachers do not have fredom of speach wilst at thier work place, the idea of no child left behind was a good idea until implemented, Ask a teacher what they think of an FCAT test and watch them cringe..

teachers and sex education, what happened here? There are teachers that are doing more than just talking about it there teaching the kids with hands on approach..

ok i'll stop with my incoherent ramblings..

It appears that that poll was created as a "Poll only, no replies" by Prius04. AFAIK it was not closed by any moderator and, in fact, is still able to be closed/locked. If he wishes to recreate the poll with the option to reply he may do so.

Now my button says "add reply" instead of "closed". And priusguy04 posted a message along with the poll, making it open to more posts. Must have been a technical glitch. My button said "closed" for about 20 min.

He posted a new poll, I deleted the first one. I think he just inadvertantly clicked the "poll only button".

Yeah, now I can see it's a new poll---the "independent" choice is now first instead of last (but, alas, still misspelled :( ).

Post #22 clearly states you talk about Politics BUT make sure you cover all sides. I don't care about all sides....6th graders don't belong there. What did I miss?

    quick story to share.

my senior year in high school (01, yes i'm just a kid compared to most of you) my english teacher, who i absolutely hated, asked us all to write about our favorite memory from high school for our last essays. and i really couldn't decide which memory was less crappy, so i decided instead to write an essay about why high school honestly produced no "favorite" type memories for me and nothing i'd really look back on too fondly.

in it, i went on a pretty scathing rant about how that year i had a major disability and spent most of my time at doctor appointments, missed a lot of classes, still pulled off a 3.7 gpa... and nearly got kicked out of school for truancy by the overzealous and power-hungry asst principal who had the nerve to send my 'parents' (well me because i was 18) a letter stating that "obviously" school was not important to me.

that was in fact my final point in that essay about why my high school years sucked.

i got a B- (and usually without studying or doing too much work i pulled of an A- average) and the teacher's only comment was "whatever"

    nice.
