I did see the "b on". I promise, I followed the directions to a T.

could it be the shifter type that toyota uses to add reverse beep? our hycam has a 'normal' shifter and no beep.

What I don't understand is why it didn't beep before the battery swap. I didn't speak with the mechanic personally and the customer service person did the translating. The CSR said the mechanic tried but couldn't get it to stop. I took it to the Toyota dealer, where I bought the car. The mechanic is their Prius specialist.

I would like to know what is telling the car to beep? The message is coming from some part of the car. I sound like a big truck when I'm in reverse and I can't hear my loud music; that's how loud and annoying it is. Thank you, everyone.

    Trust me I believe you.

So you are saying that you saw the "b on", but when you did the next step which would be to press the trip/odo mode button the "b on" did NOT change to "b off". Is that correct? If you are unsure, try one more time. Once you get the "b on" to "b off" the beeps will be gone and stay gone until the 12 volt gets disconnected. Remember to make "b on" change to "b off" you push the trip/ODO button to make it change from on to off, if you push it again, it then goes back to on, push it again goes back to off. Hence toggling. When you get "b on" to say "b off" then power down the Prius.

The default (factory setting) is "b on".

    6. If the last step was successful, "b on" or "b off" should be displayed in the location where the Odometer is normally displayed (front dash area). "b on" is beep on (default), and "b off" is beep off.
    7. Press Trip/ODO to toggle the mode.
    8. Power the car off to exit the toggle mode.

Ron, I toggled from "b on" to "b off", then back to "b on". I rushed through it not realizing that "b off" meant beeps off. I will do it again in the morning. Thank you so much.

I don't think you should accept that explanation.
It did NOT beep when you took it in; they should fix it so it does not after they worked on it.
They might actually have to contact someone else to find out how to do it. GASP.

You deserve better treatment than this.

    jbean,

Everything you are saying makes sense to me. I do understand exactly what you did and why the beeps were still on afterwards.

When you find the time, try setting it to "b off" and then shut the Prius down. After that power the Prius back up (Ready Mode), put the transaxle in reverse and see if the beeps are gone.

    Best of luck to you.

    Hi Ron,
I did it last night practically by memory, left it in the "b off" setting, and no more beeps! Thank you very much. You are all great on this forum. I'm going to write a letter to the Toyota Dealer. I'm concerned about that technician working on my car period, if he didn't know how to change the setting. Don't they know what people on this forum know, or is everyone here special? Probably special!

FWIW, most of the salesmen and some of the service writers will admit that the owners of the Prius tend to know more about the Prius than they do. I do know this. When I requested the back up beep to be modified on our new 2013, the salesman looked at me with a glassy look in his eye. I explained to him that a level two Prius tech can do it within five minutes of time with Techstream. When he talked to the service tech, according to the salesman the tech said "I don't know, but let's look." "Oh, here it is, I can have that done in just a couple of minutes."

Supposedly the tech's who are theoretically trained should be the know it all's. At least we should hope that.

IMO, we the owners need to know as much as we can about our cars. They are our investments, and we should know when something is working correctly, or when something is broken. Knowledge can be a bliss, but it can also be a burden.

Glad to hear you got the beeps turned off! And best of luck to you.

This is pretty simple. As far as I know, the reverse beep function is present and defaults to enabled on all 2004-2009 Prius models. Someone disabled OP's beep before they got it.

When they replaced the 12 volt battery, the car forgot it's customizations and the beep came back.

Just so we are all on the same page here, the beep is coming from inside the car, right? The beeper is not located outside the car like it would be on a big truck.

I have turned off the reverse beeping with the help of a member. It must have been coming from the inside of the car, but it was so obnoxious that it sounded like it was coming from outside the car.

I still don't understand why a Prius mechanic at the dealer could not figure out how to do it himself.

That would be my sign to never go back to that dealer.

I don't want to return to that dealer either. The next closet dealer is over an hour's drive, one way. There are no independent Prius mechanics in this area. Bummer. Another reason to move.

Actually when I visited japan last year, I found out that every single car there beeps (inside) when it backs up.. Toyota being a japanese company is probably the reason these priuses beep when backing up..
One other fun fact: For some strange reason, 90% of japanese people will back-up their vehicle in to a parking space, so I was thinking that is probably why lot of the priuses have back-up cameras.. (And that auto-back-up feature thing in the japanese priuses)..

    The moar you know..

I do this sometimes, it depends on the circumstances. It is usually easier to drive out than back out, although the other side of the coin is it is easier to drive in than back in. I prefer the hard work at the end of the drive, not the beginning. It doesn't really work. though, if the parking space is angled, the parking space needs to be square on if you're going to back in.
