I recently took my car in for its 10,000 mile service (at 10,569 to be exact). I know that I had gotten one of the very first cars sold in Northern California, so I assume that not too many people have gotten to this point yet (although I must admit that my commute's only 30 miles round trip, a lot less than many Bay Area folks). So, I was curious about the long term experience of others so far. Any problems? Any issues? So far my car has been trouble free. I had a flat tire once (ran over a screw), did the recall service at its 5,000 mile checkup, eliminated the backup beep (thanks PriusChat!), but primarily have just put gas in it and drive it. I generally average about 43-46 miles per gallon. My 10,000 mile analysis so far: ON THE POSITIVE SIDE Very comfortable overall -- seats, climate control, amenities, cupholders, etc. Love the Nav system People are still amazed at the legroom and storage space when they get in it for the first time. I am too. Still feel good every day about minimizing my emissions contribution to the world. LOVE the smart entry. I can't imagine getting a car without it again. ON THE NEGATIVE SIDE Wish it had a sunroof. Power seats would be nice with memory. Bluetooth headset quality sucks (I stopped using it after 2000 miles). Overall I'm very happy with the car and it's been trouble free. My fiancee's looking at getting one, so we may soon be a 2 Prius family. - Scott P.S. My last car was a 1995 Porsche 911. Haven't missed it a bit.
I have 14,100 miles on this Prius now (59,827 miles on the other). > Bluetooth headset quality sucks Bluetooth quality varies. My T610 works great. My T616 sounds muffled. I'm not sure why. All I know is that there is definitely a difference. It may not even be the brand or model of phone, it may be the specific phone itself. Perhaps someday I gain access to a few more to be able to draw a conclusion. For now, I can only say is that it work well for some.
I have 13K miles on mine and have no complaints. Nothing bad has happend except for a cracked winshield from a rock, but that is repaired now. I really love the car. It's also great to hear that someone likes their Prius more than their old 911Turbo. I'm quite amazed yet glad someone said that. Go Prius! ~Andrew
10,500 as of today. No problems. I'll be taking my car in for the SSC 40 D "regrooving" when the dealership has done a few before mine. Oh yeah, I've noticed that when the climate control is in automatic with the air conditioner turned off, that when I honk the horn, the air conditioner turns on. I thought I was hallucinating the first time, but it's happened twice. I still might be hallucinating, but I'm thinking maybe not. javascript:emoticon('')
Purchased January 3rd, 2004, to date - 10565 miles with lifetime mileage of 50.1 mpg. We had one major incident requiring the Prius to be towed to a dealer. It turned out to be rock had lodged between the dust shield and the rotor on the passenger side disk brake. If that ever happens again, I think I would be able to remove it myself with a long screw driver or stick. Needless to say I have added these items to my tool bag. Bottom line, the problem was not caused by any warranty related items and could have happened to any vehicle with disk brakes. Have been using a Motorola V600 for about a month with no problems and good audio, however, the audio will suffer if the volume is turned up to far. Overall, this is a fantastic automobile!
After 250,000 miles on my 1985 Camry and 232,000 miles so far on my 1994 Camry, it sounds very funny to hear talk of "long term" experience on a car with a 5-digit odometer reading. It isn't as though I never had to replace a radiator, a head gasket, or a transmission with the Camrys, but at this point my expectation with Toyota products is for nothing interesting in the first 100 kilomiles.
12,800 miles on mine and absolutely no problems. Lifetime mpg = 46.9 Being a Toyota I don't expect anything to happen for a good, long time. Love driving to work all week on $15 of gas when the SUV crowd moans about $50+!
That will be the general experience. But the question still bears asking in the early stage of a car's life to document build quality. How many early-life problems per 100,000 cars is a useful figure to know, not that asking on a BBS is a very scientific way to find that out.
interesting what you picked up as negatives. i have had sunroofs on my last 4 cars and never used them. will be happy to have a car without one again. i like it nice and quiet inside. i will miss my power seats for sure and i am far to addicted to my treo300 organizer/phone/web browser to switch to another phone, but my current car has onstar with personal calling, which i will also miss. supposedly the next generation treo 600 will have bluetooth, i will keep a good hope.
I've always avoided sunroofs (sunrooves?). I'm fairly tall, so I don't want something taking valuable headroom; the mostly damp British climate loves another point of ingress; and on those rare occasions that the sun does shine, I really don't want it heating up the interior more than it has to!
i agree on the height issue too. i'm not that tall but during 3 of the 4 seasons i wear a hat and the sunroof does take away headroom. except in my current vehicle, a 2002 bruick rendezvous. have to say, it has great headroom with or without the had. in some ways i will miss the buick. seating for 7, all wheel drive, and a cool heads-up display. but my kids both have cars, and i have my weekend toy. 6 cars in the family would be ridiculous.
I'm at 11000 miles now, no major problems yet. Had my services done at 4600 and 9500 miles. Most of my miles come from long trips (highway miles). I found the bluetooth quality to improve dramatically after having a firmware update on my phone. On the downside, I have to run the phone control (on screen) at max volume for most conversations to be audible enough. It beats being overdriven, however, and I can probably adjust the db gain within the service screen to compensate. My biggest gripe is probably the NAV DVD inaccuracies - I never know when I can trust it to be dead on or if I should be looking for my destination one block sooner or later. Wishlist would be more battery capacity and providing the EV button at the factory. Sunroof would only add weight and spoil the roof line IMHO. Power seats would also add uneeded weight - but I wouldn't mind having the manual equivelants for adjustability (i.e. height, lower tilt, lumbar, etc.) Factory or dealer available XM would be nice too as long as cost was reasonable.
I have 13,500 miles and I have found only trivial issues. Once in a while, the volume control is inoperable from the radio knob or the steering wheel controls. When this happens, I wait until I'm stopped and quickly turn off the car and turn it back on. I also noticed that one of the hooks on the hatchback screen has come loose. I'll mention it to my dealer when I go back in for another oil change at 17,000.
One way to avoid powering off the car with this is to enter and exit the diagnostic mode - this forces a "reboot" of the display computer, radio, etc. To enter - press "Display, touch the upper, then lower left corners of the visible display (not framed by the "Display controls" 3 times in succession (or press and hold Info (or is it display?) while toggling the parking lights 3 times). Once in, press and hold Display until the "Prius" splash screen appears. That should restore operation, and you shouldn't have to turn off the car to accomplish this. Ideally, you should have a passenger do this while driving, but I've used this trick at slow speeds to get my BT phone to reconnect when the Prius decided it just wasn't there. -Rick
Rick, Could you please put this info in the archives? I know that I will never find this thread when I might actually need to do this. Thanks!
I'm sure the "tips" on how to do it are listed in the KB already, but the technique, when used for this purpose, probably isn't. Danny - KB article?
Perhaps posting the generic method on getting into the diagnostic mode and then citing what it's uses can be (like this one): http://priuschat.com/forums/kb.php?mode=add&cat=5 Rick, I'd prefer if you submitted the article so I can be sure the wording/terminology is correct. Danny
