Safe to drive (for 5 or 50 mies) with bad MG2?

I have had my 2001 Prius towed to the dealership, who confirmed a bad MG2. Since I don't want their markup for a new transaxle, I'd like to take my car home ... and possibly to Luscious Garage. Home is 5.5 miles; LG is 45 miles away.

So, given that the warning lights come on immediately, or within a few blocks , do I need to get my car towed, or can I drive it home? And/or to LG in San Francisco. Is there any thing I can do to baby it along and keep myself safe till I get to LG (or at least home).

I understand why a short would cause a fire danger. Hosever I don't know if i's an imminent danger, or only if I ignore the shuddering and drive for another thousand miles, or what.

I'd like to be able to take my car home, and perhaps to LG, who might be able to just replace the MG2, at a price that we could justify. Is either of those safe?

What code are you getting? How does it drive? Are there drivability problems?

I last drove it a week ago; now it's been waiting at the dealership for me to decide what to do with the 2001 Prius.

After the Aux battery replacement there were no codes, but it accelerated sluggishly from a stop, and then -- I think after the next stop sign -- the car started shuddering a bit, I think on acceleration, and I got the car icon with an exclamation point. I am able to drive it, with that shuddering at a low speed. I think, but am not sure any more thatthe shuddering went away was gone when I was driving steady at residential street speed.

I don't have the probe myself; probably should, as we're a multi-Prius family.

Here are the DTC codes I was told:
    • P3000 - battery control system
    • P3001 -- Battery ECU
    • P3125 -- HV Transaxle malfunction.
      287 subcode
      "MG2 failed
however, the voltages are within normal limits.
No P3009, so no short to the ground. Initially I had a bad Aux battery code, so the Aux is freshly replaced.

Last week the advisor had written me that the technician had
Today the service advisor told me that
    .

Note: I replaced the HV battery 2 years ago.

Well, this makes it sound much less urgent:

I just talked to the service tech again, and he said that "it's OK to drive around locally, but he wouldn't recommend taking it on a road trip, or like down highway 17 [steep, windy, no shoulders]. .... If you drive it hard there's a possibility that it could get worse".

And that I'd misunderstood -- that they recommend replacing the transaxle first -- that what they've seen in the previous Gen 1 with these codes is that the inverter code went away once the transaxle is replaced.

Sounds like your tech is Prius savvy. I would think you could drive it some and maybe even make it to LG if you are patient enough to take back roads and hwys. If I were in your shoes, I would attempt to drive it to LG. If you don't make it all the way, call a tow truck at that point. If you do make it, great!!! :)

I would put a VOM on the 12V battery while it is still in "P" and just started. If you see 13.8-13.9V, go for it. If you see under 12.85V, then the DC-to-DC converter the recharges the AUX battery is bad. Sad to say, this board is on the bottom of the inverter and against the inverter coolant plate.

You can drive on AUX battery until it gets too low. Then the car stops and you have to charge up the AUX battery again.

If the car moves, you can probably get there BUT it won't be a fun trip.
