Anyone got bored of plugging in everyday?

    I don't know how much induction loss there is nowadays. Most power circuits now use switching circuits instead of transformers.

    Nope, I get great joy knowing that every time I "plug-in", I am $aving.

    The way I see it, there are those that always use their seatbelt and those that are lazy (and stupid) that don't. Which are you?

    Personally, using a seatbelt is automatic. I don't even think of it. That's the same way plugging in is for me :)

    Facially, it sounds rather silly for someone to buy a PLUG-IN and then complain about PLUGGING IN.

    I go to my fitness club every morning and plug in, I can hardly forget, especially since I have my own reservemd parking spot. I never buy gas and seldom charge at home. Can't be beat.

    It is hard to see how this system could be 90% efficient, when the current wired system is about 90% efficient. Maybe they mean 90% of 90%.

    This is like a “why do you like chocolate/music/wine?” question. Either I charge cheaply and conveniently in my own garage, OR I drive to the smelly gas station up the street, queue up, stand in the rain/cold/whatever, and hand over a couple twenties.

    Wait. You don't plug in BECAUSE you think it is optimal to drive within an hour of charging?

    You should rethink this. Yes, it is probably "optimal" to drive soon after charging...optimal being 100%. But for illustrative purposes it is probably 99% as good if you drive a few hours later and 98% as good if you drive sometime within the next day, etc. Not charging is 50% as good, by comparison.

    Seeing that "999 mpg" makes it pretty worthwhile to me. That and the extra versatility it grants.

    Totally OT...
    I have a friend who, back in college, instructed the theater interns working on the sets to be very careful about leaking extension cords. To prevent electrons from leaking out the ends he told them to be sure to tie the end of any loose cords in a knot.

    Another friend of mine was very confused the next day when he walked into the scene shop and found knotted extension cords all over the place :p

    Yes, the first 90% is 10% loss in the car converting to DC and charging the battery. There would be an additional 10% (or whatever) loss for the induction process.

    Let's see . . . . 5 seconds to plug/unplug (in our case) maybe every other day into fully amortized PV grid tied power (aka free) . . . .

    or . . . . wait once a week at costco for 15 minutes to purchase carcinogenic liquid explose fuel that funds al queda flight schools.

    It's a pesonal choice, no doubt, but Boring? Hmmmm decisions decisions ;)
    It's no more boring than pluggin in the tooth brush ... or the tablet, or our phones ... or when we break out the bread maker ... or the shaver ... or any other appliance. Actually it's kind of strange (imo) to imagine folks thinking any kind of plugging in as some kind of chore. Maybe it's because some are older, and remember a time when things were more difficult. It's like commedian Lewis CK jokes about ... how entitled we are now days ... bitching about sitting on the tarmack for 20 minutes before we "magicly fly in 4 hours across the nation in a chair that reclines" - whereas our heirs came across the nation in covered wagons taking 3 or 4 months ... got an arrow in the neck ... died in route ... spouse marries another ... kids born on the way ... an entirely different crowd arriving than when it left. Yep ... different times.

    Ya.. I'm really confused by this thread. Why did you buy a plugin vehicle?

    I last filled up on March 14th. Two bars left, so I'll need to fill up in the next week or so.

    About 1000 miles on this tank.. car says I achieved about 130 mpg.

    Regarding charging losses...
    L1 Direct plug in 120V is generally considered to have between 10% to 20% loss.
    L2 Direct plug in 120V is generally considered to have between 7% to 15% loss.
    I've charted my Volts charging efficiency at L2 240v- it typically has a 14% loss.

    It doesn't seem possible that Inductive Charging could have less loss than direct plug-in.
