Hi all, does anyone have first hand experience trying to use a Saris Bones on a Prius v? I'm just trying to see if I should invest the time trying to figure it out myself this weekend (I have both, but they have never met) or if this is a confirmed waste of time.

First hand info good or bad is very much appreciated.

If I get none, I'll probably go ahead and spend some time and post back to help out the next person. Thanks.

There is a thread in the main Prius v forum about external bike racks. I was just reading though that thread and saw the Saris Bones was one mentioned. Check it out. I'm personally going the roof rack route as I want to be able to carry other things as well as bikes.

Thanks, I saw that thread which is why I asked for first hand experience. I gave up roof racks a while ago, in part because I've learned the hard way that in the bike vs. barrier contest, barrier invariably wins. I've also taken up road biking and the thought of getting a bike off my roof in road shoes is not one I'd really want to have to deal with.

At the moment, the Saris would probably on be a temporary solution. I'm leaning towards one of the Saris Axis Al or the Thule Helium - as they are the two lightest ones around, paired with an ecohitch Stealth. I mostly like the Saris as it is made in the USA. The Thule seems to be slightly better regarded though. Hmm. Haven't pulled the trigger on anything yet though. Depending on what I learn through the weekend, that may change soon.

This is just to close off this thread. I made a final assessment on my Saris Bones without actually attempting to mount it. By looking closely at the Bones and my v I reached the same conclusion that others have - not a good idea. Both the spoiler at the rear and the sheet metal on the liftback would, in my view, take too heavy a load.

So...I have ordered an Ecohitch stealth 2" and a Thule Helium Aero 3 bike. The 2" because I prefer them and the hitch on my Honda Odyssey is a 2", and the Helium because after a bit of time this weekend going around and looking at the three candidates (Helium, Yakima Highlight, Saris Axis Al) it was clearly the superior product. For others' benefit, the Yakima was definitely in the middle, and I might have gone with it if money had been a concern. My view on the Saris is that it is a piece of, well, less polished than the other two. I think it is over priced at almost any price point. It is light though, I'll give it that.

I think the thing that sold me on the Thule is the quick attach system and the integrated single key locking. Both nice features for someone with a busy life and expensive bike...
