    2007 Prius with ~133k miles:

We bought it used a little over a year ago and haven't any problems with it at all until now. Last night from a cold start, the check engine light came on along with the red triangle of doom.
Checked the oil, it's fine, just had it changed a few weeks ago.
Did the battery test, it's fine, 12.2v during the test and 14v with a load.
Popped the hood, and I can see little waves in the pink inverter fluid when the car is in Ready.
A drive around the block revealed that it's not running well at all... It could barely make it up a small hill.

Before I get it towed to the dealer, what's next in line for troubleshooting? I'm guessing it's probably not the spark plugs since it doesn't buck or jolt??

Oh I should've mentioned, the vent in the backseat was pulling air through it? Is that normal?

It's very hard to advise without the DTC codes for the warning lights. Once you bring it to the dealer, report the codes here along with any subcodes.

A guess would be the HV battery might be going bad. If you are in a CARB state, you are still in warranty for a new one.....FREE. What state are you in?

I believe this to be the current list. A CARB state warranty for the battery is extended from 8yr/100k miles to 10 year/150k miles warranty.

With the exception of AZ, any year after the Model Year listed is also covered.

    That will be the day!

To the OP, Yes, if you can hear the battery fan running on high, then you have battery overheating issues, which is usual when there is a module failure. It can also be due to a dirty cooling fan back there, but more likely this is another case of battery failure in a hot climate coming a bit earlier than elsewhere.

When parking the car, use window shades. Don't let it bake in hot afternoon sun, as it makes life short for the HV battery. Use A/C when driving to keep the battery air intake cooler too.

Maybe normal, maybe not. Need more info.

    1. Was it loud enough to hear easily from the drivers seat of was it just whispering so that you had to place your ear up to the duct to hear it? Many people don't realize that this fan runs very often at low speed, too quiet to hear unless you place your ear up to the vent.

    2. How hot was the weather and had you been driving a lot of hilly or mountainous routes?

ugh... so I picked up a code reader and this is what I have:

    P0A80 x2
    P3018 x2

Looks like we're dead in the water.

The fan is definitely noticeable from the driver's seat. Hasn't really been driven in the heat much since last Summer, South Carolina is rather flat and NOT a CARB state.

Yeah that's definitely a sign of a bad battery. And of course P0A80 pretty much confirms it. :(

It's best to ignore the comments of Rich12, he's a very mature senior citizen that acts like he's 3. He seems to have been through a lot, you'll have to excuse his behavior.

Sorry to hear about the issues with your battery...
Keep us updated on your resolution, I'm hoping you don't have to shell out too much cash to replace it!
It might be worthwhile to search the forums for those who've had similar issues, maybe you'll be able to find a good deal on a repair. At the very least, you'll be able to compare repair prices...

Try and pick up a salvage pack if you can find one. They are fairly cheap and the install is easy. There are aftermarket rebuilt batteries that depending on your location might work out to be much cheaper to slightly cheaper. Then of course there is always the dealer.
