steering wheel air recirculate button schizophrenia

On my 2005 (package II) Prius, when the cabin is hot, the air recirculate toggle button takes on new meaning. It cycles the screen display from "Climate" to "Audio," to the fuel histogram.

Using the touch screen, I can change change all the climate settings regardless of the car temperature.
There does not seem to be anything else wrong.

Is this likely the problem just in the switch, or is a computer illness possible?
The 3-part switch is not cheap, and cannot be returned if it is not the problem.

Is there a test that can be done at the dealer to see if the problem is the switch or the computer-- or do they have to replace the switch and see if it fixes the problem?
