I think I've seen many examples of 300k mile Prius selling above $4000. I think the sweet spot is to find the 150k mile Prius for $6000.....assuming you like high mileage cars.

Do they have any warranty info or any info for that matter on the hv battery? If its new that could be why they are asking so much for the car. If it was rebuilt by someone reputable I would offer $3,200-$3,500. Its hard to know without more info and pics.

Don't do it jj. Buy an old Civic or Corolla for your trip instead.

My 05 has 222K miles and I'm hesitant to drive it on a long road trip from this time forth. Although it's unlikely that something will fail, I don't want to risk it since the traction battery is original along with virtually everything else. If the HV battery should decide to die on me 500 miles from home, I won't have as many replacement options as I have near home. Consequently, my Prius has been relegated to daily driver duties and will no longer leave the metro area (unless one of my other cars needs emergency repair).

I'm taking my 2014 Altima on a 1500 mile - 5 day road trip tomorrow. If it breaks down (and it better not or I'll never buy another Nissan again) I get it towed for free to the nearest Nissan dealer who must do a warranty repair on it - whatever is wrong with it.

You can buy a newer battery and replace your 2005 as preventive maintenance. I just did that on my 2005. Now no more fear in leaving town

Update: the 2014 Altima averaged 42 mpg for the 1300 mile trip - 95% hwy miles. No concerns - it's still new with only 4000 miles on it after 5 months of use.

Wow you all are a bunch of negative nancies.

A Prius was not designed to go 180K miles. That's a stupid number. Many have gone much more on original important things. Some have gone much less with major repairs. It is a car, not a tank.

A car with that high of miles bought used where you don't know how it was treated, is always going to be an unknown. If you are not allotting any time for road maintenance, you might want to budget a bit of spare time here and there. That's true of any vehicle, even a brand new one.

As to the $4000 repair bill, while true, it is also stupid. You don't take a used vehicle to the dealer for maintenance and let them have carte blanche. You go buy a used salvage battery from a car with 100K-150K miles on it (some for half that or less) for $300 on eBay. Or some salvage yards are $800. Or rebuilt ones for $1500. You don't buy a brand new inverter with shrinkwrap on it, you pull out of a junker for a couple hundred bucks. Transaxle, same thing since they almost never go bad.

At that high of mileage you definitely need to check the struts, the brakes, and other normal things that wear out over time. Spark plugs, oil, transaxle fluid, that sort of thing.

I wouldn't be scared off by the high miles, but I would be conscious of it.
