Toyota To Start Fuel Cell Vehicle Production In December

Not as sinister looking as the production (shame!)

Will cost around a Tesla, but refuel faster ONLY if you can go to a Hydrogen Fuel Cell Pump. Article states running a familiar Synergy Drive Engine which begs the question...where is the next gen engine technology?

Best of all, with rumored only 50/month, there won't be any waiting lines for a long, long time.

Concept looks cool, production looks like a lame Corolla.

I am hopeful they develop the fuel cell vehicles in parallel with an actual BEV, but I realize the currently reality is very different. Oh well...

Hummmm, I wonder if we can get some 'mock' FCV bling and transform our ordinary Prius into FCV look-alikes. <GRINS>

Not to add: What's the price of hydrogen fuel cells per gallon?

Looks like a Toyota Sai / Lexus HS Derivative.

Despite having test leases of FCEVs from Honda and Mercede Benz for years, and the upcoming arrival of these new ones, there is still no regulation in California that allows a hydrogen refueling station to charge directly for dispensing the fuel. As of now, all the leases include free fuel to the driver.

Hydrogen is measured in kilograms, and that amount is close to a gallon of gasoline in energy content. Estimates seem to be in the $4 to $9 per kg range, sans tax. Making it from natural gas is cheaper than electrolysis.

Probably won't be a waiting line with 10/month. I can hear Team Toyota gritting their teeth right now. :p

How do I apply for the Toyota FCV? According to Robert Llewellyn (Kryten) on his FullyCharged show, filling the Honda Clarity fuel cell cost him the same as a gasoline refill. So I would expect the same to be true in the US.

I wonder how many people we will read about, who "carved the face in half" with rapdily-escaping hydrogen?

I assume he was in the UK at the time. Gasoline fill ups cost more there. Then the hydrogen may not have been taxed. Another consideration is the tank size. A small fuel tank on an ICE is 9gal. The Clarity holds the gallon equivalent of 4 to 5 gallons.

There is no doubt in my mind that the swirly painted hydrogen test car is a converted Lexus HS250h.

Hey bill, toyota has said that it is built on that platform, which is also the toyota sai. What we don't know is if those test cars were final look, and how it is different than the hs and sai. I think most of us are more curious about the next prius liftback and phv, as I doubt anyone on this board will actually buy a toyota fcv in the next couple of years, but many might buy a new prius.

Toyota to start producing fuel cell vehicles in December - CSMonitor.com
Toyota's hydrogen fuel cell vehicle will go into production ahead of schedule, with production planned for mid-December 2014. Sales will also begin "by the end of the year" reports Japan Times (via Autoblog),
ahead of Toyota's original on-sale date some time in 2015.[/quote]
Break out the champagne its a week or two ahead of schedule! Note this is for Japan, its still 2015 for north america unless they slip the schedule.
More good news, its 90kw, not 100kw, that should save some money. I mean its as fast as a prius, who would ever want more power.

Beautiful. In 2009 toyota said it would cost around $50K in 2015. Now in 2014 it will cost $30K-$50K in 2020. I am wondering what they will say in 2019;) It was only 2 weeks ago that Jim Lentz said fuel cells were cheaper than bevs to fortune magazine.

If EVs really are a "dead end" we all better go buy Teslas before they are discontinued!
    /end joke
So where do I apply to get a Toyota FCV? Hard to believe a fuel cell made of platinum is cheaper than a battery made of lithium (which is as common as ocean water).

Wait if Lithium is as common as ocean water, why the heck is it so expensive.

Yup, I agree. The test vehicle looks like a Toyota Sai/Lexus HS250h. I believe they're just using the body shell (can't drive around on a chassis!).

Sassy car does not have time for your shenanigans. It looks like it's judging me.
