In an attempt to surgically remove myself from the specific debate over whether the OP should be ticketed for driving the "minimum" posted speed limit by choice, I'd say clearly regardless of what you believe in that regard, the Police Officer in question was acting highly unprofessional. It's embarrassing enough to get pulled over by a Police Officer for speeding or "un-speeding"? without a sarcastic commentary coming from the police officers external speaker. The officer should be enforcing The Law, and trying to make the environment safer, not massaging his own personal beliefs about "slow" cars or economical drivers. If he thought the OP's driving style was endangering those around him? Then come to the drivers window and explain exactly how and why, and write the ticket and go on your way...

I personally WOULD NOT drive 40 on a highway. I do believe in keeping up with the flow. I might be "legally" wrong, but I perceive posted minimums as more for those vehicles that might be towing large items. The Prius IS capable of keeping up with the normal speed and tempo of a highway, and I think it is safer and more courteous to those around you to do so. (So much for divorcing myself from the debate).

But if the ticket was presented in the manner the OP outlines? It sounds and feels to me more like a personal vendetta by the Police Officer. His motivation should be solely enforcing the law, and trying to maintain safety. This should be done, without sarcastic commentary. I'm not against him giving you the ticket...but I am against the way he did it.

Well good thing this was a 10-lane-wide highway with plenty of passing room...... as for unprofessional officers, just goto youtube and watch the videos. There are millions of them. (Some even beat the driver or sexual molest the passengers.) I really don't like criminal behavior.

    haha, Nice try Troy...

as I know, CA does not utilized dual speed sign r2-4 or r2-4a as I know for freeway/interstate/main roads, do not know on sub-divisions :)

even in NC, AL, SC, and VA as I know ..
you will get ticket or warning when driving to slow

    but Texas is unique :
    : Texas Administrative Code
MINIMUM SPEED LIMIT signs (R2-4) shall be displayed in conjunction with and beneath the MAXIMUM SPEED LIMIT signs (R2-1) or as an integral sign (R2-4a).

    once again.. Nice try :p

Last week I had to get home in a hurry (120 miles), and I didn't go below 80mph in my 2nd gen, felt good to forget about mileage for a day, and just drive hard.

Well drive on Interstate 210 just east of Pasadena and you WILL see a minimum speed limit posted. If I ever stop working 70 hour weeks (and therefore have free time) I will drive there myself and take a photo of it.

And the next time a cop pulls me over, I will show it to him. Of course if I'm wrong, I will happily admit it, but I know with certainly I saw a "40 minimum" sign on the CA interstate. That's why I thought it was legal for me to do that speed. I see other states post minimum signs, so it would be very odd if CA did not. (shrug)

I checked on Google StreetView and only saw regular 65 mph signs heading away from East Pasadena through Arcadia and Monrovia.

Can you give a more specific location? Which side of the intersecting roads of Rosemead, I-605 or highway 57 were the minimum speed signs?

    ha, nice try again :p

based on CA Basic Speed laws, no such r2-4a :p. you can check what is r2-4 versus r2-4a on official federal site.
Basic Speed laws only define safe speed limit , and never mentions on r2-4a traffic sign.
    please check ->
    V C Section 22400 Minimum Speed Law

admitting wrong is not my point, but do NOT spread false information is my concern!

I think , some priuschat members can verify you claim is wrong or correct. just give the exact pinpoint location.

each state has it's own regulation for traffic sign,
I know 100% GA, NC, and VA do not have r2-4a. you will get ticket (mostly warning aka love letter) for driving slowly in interstate/freeway.
rule of thumb : drives 10mph-15mph below speed limit

oh yeah, Texas has r2-4a :D

Sure, California law seems clear that minimum speeds can be set and signage posted. The immediate question seems to be whether such minimum speeds and signage have been developed and installed on 210 east of Pasadena as you said. Or anywhere in the LA area. Even anywhere in California?

I'm up in the San Francisco area. I've seen minimum speed signs before but not in my daily commute and they may have been in other states while I was on road trips.

    TH,

So why have you not gone to Google Map and display the double speed limit signs where you claimed to be pulled over? It's very, very easy to do that and prove your entire story on this thread was not fraud. There is no weasel room on this one.

    You don't understand.....

    There's always room for weasels!!!
    ....Always!

He just has to say that there used to be a sign there....or the creeps who drive legally photoshopped whatever picture you show him---or that the date on the Google Maps photo predates the sign that's there NOW...or Elvis....aliens....Cheney....

We're dealing with somebody who thinks that it ought to be legal to drive 40 on a limited access highway for no reason other than to burn gas at a rate that's slightly less than people driving with the flow of traffic.

    That's it!
If getting pulled over doesn't loop this guy in, nothing else is going to work.

Why should we believe he was pulled over in the first place?

Perhaps I am not following the argument ...

If open lanes were available for anyone wishing to drive fast(er), what is your problem ?
Personally though, if I was driving that slow I would have the emergency blinkers going to give up and coming vehicles an early wake up call to pay extra attention since I am not what they expect.
