    It was 73°F.

I always include temp & date at the start of each driving video.

    I liked it too.
I'd be interested in seeing cell temp(s) if you can squeeze in one or two of the banks.
What was the ev range before you started?
It looked to me like ev ran out at 14.9 mi. Is that what you saw too?
I noticed the ICE come on twice as you were coming off two stops.

My ev range was 16.1mi. this morning and I ran out of ev at 14.5 mi.
    .6 mi from my destination.
I'll have to see if I can find a way around some of the hills next time.

The EV estimate when I started was 12.8 miles, which is high for my typical driving. The resulting 13 miles of actual EV was typical.

I did fire up the engine just prior to the steep hill climb onto the 55 mph portion of the drive out there. Having the HV/EV available to choose when to take advantage of the engine is nice.

I accelerated briskly at the 2 lights along the way too, leaving it in EV, so you get to see how quickly the engine shuts back off on its own immediate after the power demand drops.

What I'm noticing on the mpg gauge is the ICE kills the ev mpg whenever it comes on in my car. It may just be the the ICE in not broken in yet and that I don't know how to control it yet, neither .... But after only a minute or two of ICE running my mpg drops from 999 mpg to 350 mpg or less.
heavens to murgatroyd - Urban Dictionary: heavens to murgatroid 350 mpg or less

I'm not getting the scangauges average mpg gauge niether.
I starts off at 0 and climbs up to around 1000 and jumps all over the place. I see it up in the 2000+ range often
and the faster I drive on the highway in ev the higher it climbs.
If I could only drive as the crow flies on the highway, downhill all the time.

John, that's pretty incredible information, thanks for the trouble it took to produce the video. It will be interesting to see in a future one at a higher outside temperature how the battery temps change.

I wonder how much less the battery heats up if someone were to never go past the halfway point on the HSI. And I would have to assume that heavy regen is as much to blame for high batt temps as anything, if not more.

Can someone recommend an equivalent product that works on the iPhone? I think that capturing and potentially recording over time, all these parameters would be a great way to accumulate an operational history and trend on the car.

    Thanks!

Just think of the data we'll see when temps are below freezing...

getting good mpg below freezing is a challenge for the most experienced hypermiler.
Even if someone preheats everything, blocks grille and insulates the cabin, I'll bet the car still knows it's cold outside.
It would be nice if there was a bigger market for winter mileage accessories like pack, cabin, coolant and oil heat while plugged in. Zone barriers to conserve the heat where most needed when not plugged in. And maybe a trunk shade that attaches to the top of the hatch instead of at the top of the rear seat to reduce summer heat and maybe some notches for the windscreen too..
I know I'm way out there in expecting any automaker to be able to market those types of options in a car for the general public, but it would be nice if one or two of them could make some specialized plugin accessories so we can actually get noticalby batter mileage in the cold weather too.
If they put windmills up front we would know which way the winds blowing by how much juice they put back into the pack.
Someday, but I wouldn't hold my breath, not again anyways.

Summer has finally come to New England. My observations that the estimated EV miles would be above 14 are true. Some mornings after a charge the meter says 15+ miles. That means the estimate has gone from 11 EV miles in winter to 15 EV miles in summer. So there does not appear to be any battery pack degradation after 11 months of use with 12k miles.

One other interesting note about the effect of temperature on mpg performance. In the winter we do lots of skiing. To get to our favorite mountain and return home is about 320 miles. With only a single charge the mpg in Feb. (temp = 15F) was about 50 with part highway and part state roads. We just completed that same trip at the end of June (temp = 85F) with an mpg of 62.

good stuff PWP - there are some 2012 PiP owners reporting the same over 2 yrs so hopefully no real degradation for more years to come...
I am surprised you were able to keep the EV est as high as 11 during Boston's winter.
Mine is also garaged but dropped to 9.8 last winter - and up to 15.4 now

Found a barely-publicized plug-in spot in a public underground parkade today. I plugged in and went for a 3 hour walk around the area. When I got back, I had 19.1 km EV range, and I turned off the EV mode as soon as I turned on the car. It still dwindled down to 16 kms by the time I got home and it was less than a 10 min drive. I also had a fairly steep decline in elevation. Does anyone know how to stop this gradual bleed-off of EV range?

You know, after I read what you wrote.. it kind of dawned on me that maybe the PiP NEEDS this extra "space"for regular hybrid/HV operation. What I mean is, if you were able to maintain 85% SoC (which, is completely full in terms of the PiP), the car obviously can't function as a "regular Prius" without consuming some battery and having space to put some back.

If it WERE able to maintain the full 85% SoC, then in regular HV mode, you would never have any electric-assist and you would also never have any regen. Does that make sense? It seems to make perfect sense to me.. but it is Monday morning.. so I could be way off base and making up things in my mind.
