thanks so much for the replies I appreciate it greatly... I am probably going to use safelight since it is guaranteed, but may I ask if anyone knows what soundproofing is? These are the options it gives me:
    • Windshield green tint
    • Windshield soundproofing green tint/blue shade
    • Windshield soundproofing green tint

    Thanks in advance!

Never heard of it, sounds like a money making option. You probably would get the same glass regardless of which option you choose

Angie's list highly recommends Nacco Auto Glass at Mansfield, TX, 35 miles from Dallas. Never heard of those 3 things you have listed. I would not buy either of them.

I had my windshield replaced in January by Safelight. It was through insurance coverage so it was free. I had two choices for replacements, windshield green tint with or without the blue shade. I don't recall anything being said about soundproofing. I chose the blue shade, which is a darkened strip about 6 inches wide across the top of the glass. It was part # FW02602GTNOEE. The glass label says SGC (TM) if anybody can decode that. There is an SGC website here which says they are suppliers of Pilkington glass. Don't know if that was what I got. The green tint was what I had before. The blue shade is kind of nice for those late afternoon, low sun angle days. All of the masking behind the rear view mirror and around the periphery was identical to the old windshield. I did notice a slight aberration toward the bottom of the glass between where the windshield wiper sits and the bottom. A slight distortion when you look through there for maybe the first foot of horizontal length from the door post on the driver and passenger side. I don't spend a lot of time looking through that part of the glass though, so no worries. I am very satisfied with my replacement mainly because the old glass was so horribly scratched and dinged up.

so i found this on sound proofing: The key to soundproofing your car is understanding how sound gets from the engine to the inside of the car. Instead of traveling through the body of the car, sound comes in first through the hood, then through the windshield. The hood blocks very little sound and the windshield blocks even less. Applying a sheet of vinyl nitrile foam to the underside of the hood will drastically cut down on unwanted engine noise.

Huh. Wonder if the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) hood includes this foam treatment. I have read that replacement hoods can be either the aluminum OEM type or cheaper sheet metal. I'll take a peek under the inside cover next time I'm under the hood. Don't they make medical-grade disposable gloves out of vinyl nitrile? And lastly, how do you get a windshield that has this soundproofing treatment? I too have been constructing search terms and surfing, so far unsuccessfully, for information.

I have a new Avalon. It is widely advertised as having soundproof windows. It is quiet inside the car. You can hear outside noises but not too much. That's all I know about it which is not much. It has Pilkington windows in it.
