Hi all! It's been a long time since I've posted and I'm sorry if this topic has already been discussed.

My question...Has anyone sold their 05 to buy an 06? I absolutely LOVE my car but we've recently been thinking about the 06's. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Will I be losing a ton of money? Or is it worth it ?

    Thanks in advance folks!

    hi!

could You tell a little more about why You might want a 06 ..?

i had the option of choosing a 05 or the facelift06 version..(06 not in stock tho)

i chosed the 06 cause in my case the dealers here wants the same price anyway.
so then choosed the 06facelift, simply cause its newer and yes facelifted..and i loose less money when im gonna sell it in the future compared to a non facelift bought in the same time period..

but if had bought prius last year non facelift , i seriously doubt that id change to a 06 now.... the changes after all are minor... atlest here in Norway id loose alot of money of just having the car 1 year and buy a new one next year....

and if could afford id buy 2 priuses since i had so much troubles choosing between black or a silver one....

I did exactly that. Main reason was the improved nav display. When I purchased the 05 I knew what the 06 improvements would be, but did not realize the display improvement would be as significant. I was also concerned about waiting till the 06 arrived and possibly missing the Calif HOV stickers.

When the 06s did arrive I had a better handle on the sticker situation. I also felt I could get top dollar on my 05 with stickers - and I did get top dollar. That might be an advantage I had in Calif helping the 05 price.

Check out the link at the top, 2006 Prius Info where the differences are spelled out.

I paid MSRP for my 05 and when I realized the tax avantags of buying a car in 06 (not the year of the car but the year put in service) i decided to see what i could get for my car. I went to Craigs list and, OH MY GOD! I listed my car and sold it in 2 days for $1500 less than I paid after 1 year and 15K. I ordered an 06 for MSRP and with the tax advantages I think to have a new car is going to cost me about $3000. But I had the old one for a year I get a new one and I upgraded to pakage 8 form the old 6.

    WIN WIN for me.

I very briefly considered trading up, mainly because when I arrived in Spokane I soon realized I needed NAV. This city's streets are crazy.

My dad bought a new car every year, just to always have a new car. He felt a car was more reliable in its first year. (I tend to disagree, but that was his choice.) But he was terribly rich and could afford it, and didn't spend money on much else besides a new car every year (two actually: one for himself and one for my nasty step-mother.)

Some people just like always having a new car, and if you can afford it, that's your choice.

I finally decided against trading off my perfectly-good car. I bought a Garmin Street-Pilot instead, and I'm very happy with it. During my first few months, I'd have really liked the back-up camera, but eventually I learned to park my car, and while the camera would be cool, it's not a necessity. I'll wait for the next major model revision.

I traded in an 04 for an 05 (to get rid of tan interior and package 0, to go to gray interior and NAV), and next month will be trading in my 05 for an 06 (just for fun, leather, and to get the tax credit).
goofy, I know. I had sworn years back I'd only buy late-model used cars, and that I'd never spend more than $20k for a car.

Based upon your localtion on the East Coast where there is no shortage of Prius 2006's ask yourself who would be willing to buy your 05 and at what price?

I bought a NEW 2005 on 1/2/06 at $1500 off of MSRP and am also entitled to a $3150 federal tax credit because I bought a NEW 2005 Prius in 2006.

If a buyer wanted a Prius, the 2005 used Prius would have to be at a substantial discount to be a better buy than a new 2006 with the tax credit.

Now if you were on the West Coast where there are not enough 2006's available or if the buyer did not qualify for the federal tax credit you might do OK selling your 2005. Given your location you might not be able to get an interested buyer at the price you need to make trading up practical.

We're thinking about upgrading for: the improved NAV system, the darker seats (I hate the very light tan ones I have now) and the tire guage. Had the tire guage in my Sienna and could have used it with Pri the other day! Flat tire right in the middle of a busy intersection! Think the back up camera might be fun...but it isn't the reason I'd buy an 06.

This reason might sound silly but: someone hit my rear passenger door with their side view mirror. $1400 in damages, fixed now and looks great but I know it happened. :(

At any rate, I guess you are right about checking out what the resale is in the North east. I'll check with my dealer (who just happens to be a personal friend...a real +).

    Thanks to all who replied!

I picked up my 2006 last Friday and sold my 2004 with about 33,550 miles on it for about $4,000 less than I paid for it. I could have probably got a little more for the 2004 but just wanted to move on.

The 2006 is definitely more stable going down the road, the display is much better, the grey leather seats are more comfortable and the blue tooth connection with my Treo 650 responds much faster and better.

I will sorely miss the cassette player since I listen to a lot of books-on-tape. It will take some time to figure out an efficient way to transfer cassettes to a digital format so i can play them through the AUX-IN jack.

On an after tax basis and added comfort/convenience basis it was a no brainer to buy the 2006.

I traded an 04 (18months) with almost 25k miles on it. Tires needed replacing.

lost less then 2k on it from original price. So with the tax credit it actually was paying to upgrade...

But i did get some upgrades :-p like the VSC and the Camera and Bluetooth... I'm happy :-p

    Crazy stuff.

There was another post on here about selling the '05 so soon and still taking the full $2000 deduction... I've been wanting to sell my '05 (only 7k miles, so should get decent money) but don't want to lose the tax break. Any of you who've sold the '05's gotten tax advice otherwise?

Why not get a cheap $10 walkman and connect the headphoe out to the aux input on your prius? Im guessing this is how the ipods hook up to the aux input port although I may be wrong as I seem to be the only 23 year old college student who does not own an Ipod...

Count me in as another who sold a '04 and bought an '05.
