Who has gone from a Gen III Prius to a PIP?

    :)It's easy to get caught up with new cars and especially what's perceived as newer technology. Hopefully, with the release of the Gen 4 Prius, you can negotiate a a good deal (lease or purchase) on another vehicle.

    I can by way of a 06 hch. Still learning more ways of getting better mpg out of that too.
    After learning how to deal with the IMA battery deterioration issue on the hch the PIP was a welcome addition by the SO ( superior officer ) :).
    And after learning about the hch battery deterioration issue I'm like a kid in a candy store with all these new buttons, plugs , camera and guages to play with.
    It will probably take me years to figure out how to optimize the three different driving modes.
    Been experimenting with ev mostly this last month, but I'm now seeing I'm going to have to use eco and power too, to get the bigger picture.

    I recently went from a 2012 2 to a 2014 prius PIP mainly to get the green sticker here in California.

    If it wasn't for the sticker, I would of never of done it. 12 miles is just to limited of a range.

    1. bought 2010 Gen III in June of 2009. Picked up 2012 PIP in May 2012 as soon as it was delivered. Had to drive 2500 miles to get it home.
    2. The first (and therefor the last) 9 miles of my commute is over 30 mph back country roads. By the time I got home the battery was completely discharged and when I left the next morning would use mostly gas to charge the battery. Then 5 miles hwy (60 mph). Then in 4 miles in town.
    3. Yes. This way use very little gas day to day. (Able to charge car at office) About the same amount as Gen III on numerous cross country trips. Computed the cost of electricity vs cost of gas for same miles is about half.

    Leased a 2010, when lease was over wanted another Prius. Salesman showed me a pip, for same price as a Prius 3 looked nicer so I leased the Pip. In my driving world 12 miles EV is to short, so unless they increase it I'll look into other vehicles when my lease is up in two years.

    Rob I'm retired, so no work charging, just my daly traveling around, to the gym and home is 12.5 miles can't make it on EV most days, too cold or to hot( Heat /AC). If I go slight out of the route I definitely cant make it in EV. Really need about 20-25 mile range.

    ^ Well the current Gen I Volt already gets 38-50 EV miles, the next gen Volt MY2016 may have en even larger battery- so maybe consider it in two years....

    What percent of your total miles are 100+ mile trips?

    For me the current PiP EV range covers my usual commute. Since 50% of my total miles are 100-400 mile trips, getting the highest ICE mpg made the PiP decision pretty straightforward.

    Hard to argue, though, with an upgraded EV range as you describe - as long as we can keep or get better ICE mpg.

    My auto-bio:

    >New '89 Geo Metro base, rated 58 mpg hwy. Ran strong for 290k miles/ 13 yrs, sold because of rust and I wanted a car with AC.

    >2 yr old '00 Honda Insight, rated 71 hwy, first car to beat the Metro's number. Totaled. Left turner in traffic took it from me.

    >Series of Honda Civic VX, 2 VW TDI's, experimenting with WVO.

    >2yr old '10 Toyota Prius IV w/Solar Sunroof, bought with 108k on it, window sticker showed +$31k !, I felt like I was living the future! Loved it! Sold with 127k miles.
    (Skipped the whole PiP patch thing after doing the research. Figured if I'm making car payments, why not get the highest tech car on the road?)

    >'13 Volt, only the rear safety option, $23.6K after tax, was a 2400 mile demo, never said I love a car before this one !! I can do away with gas use, unless I take a road trip, then it's 37-40 mpg hwy. Get to charge at work.

    I know you are just looking for attention...so I shouldn't give in, but oh well....

    If a bigger battery makes "highest tech" then shouldn't a Tesla be the "highest tech?"

    Otherwise I agree with you. If you don't need to ever haul 5 total people or very big items, and you have a "just right" commute range, and you don't ever take many long road trips...then yes, the Volt is the best choice out there.

    You can't go anywhere at anytime in a Tesla. It's just a B/A, fancy, expensive BEV.
    I know, "Superchargers will be here soon, 20 minutes gives you 180 miles, blah, blah,"
    That's not the kind of road trips I want to take. Think car camping and tiny roads to natural wonders!

    You're right, 25 in the dead of winter and 50 in the summer may not work for some, but it probably works for most.
    No stink for 6 weeks at a time! No oil changes for 2 yrs at a time. No brake pad changes for who know how long, for instance:

    Coming down Pikes Peak everyone stops at a Ranger Checkpoint to have their front brakes read with an IR reader.
    Mine were 75° front/105° rear on a 65° day. The ranger said he'd seen hot brakes on Prii. Charged the battery 75% on the way back to Manitou Springs, that was probably hard on the battery. ( correction: that WAS the hardest thing that ever happened to this battery.)

    ps. I just rode the brakes like a tourist. Using L slowed me too much.

    My wife has a 3mi commute, and I'm trying to convince her to ride a bicycle. I've started commuting 6.5 miles to work on a bike.

    Her concern is arriving sweaty, and having to get up earlier. My ride only increases my commute time by 10min, and I shower at work. That isn't an option for my wife.

    When I get a chance, I'll ride with her to work on one of her days off to see if a leisurely ride can get us there safely, and without being a sweaty mess.
