Prius c tops Prius family sales in Australia in 2012

    First - the 2012 hybrid Camry here in Australia has been redesigned to the point that they have a huge boot - plenty of room for 3 large suitcases (my Prius can only take 2 large suitcases).

    Second - the Falcons are all LPG. The wagons - approx 50% of the taxis in Sydney are wagons have the LPG tank under the load area where the spare normally resides. The spare is moved into the load area where is sits vertically, still leaving plenty of room for goods to be loaded. These are no longer built by Ford, and at least one of the Toyota dealers is pushing the V as the replacement. The Falcon sedans have the LPG tank in the boot, and only have capacity for 1 large suitcase. Nearly all the Falcons are factory fitted LPG.

    Third - I have had almost no negative comments on the Prius, and definitely none after stating the fuel consumption.

    As long as Toyota get it's reliability rating high on their hybrid vehicles, their will be increase in sales. I was skeptical at first about their hybrids and I'm now officially a convert with 2 Priuses.

    I've struggled to find updated Australian figures for some time now, but have just come across the Year To Date figures for 2013 through to the end of July 2013.

    Prius c - 1440
    Prius v - 602
    Prius liftback - 322

    Rob, any figures on the Camry Hybrid? I am seeing more and more Camry Hybrids around Sydney. I think that they may be outselling all the Prius variants.

    Yes, Camry Hybrid far outsells the Prius in Australia.

    During calendar year 2012 the figures were:

    7,107 Camry Hybrid (interestingly 1,143 of these were in December alone)
    1,883 Prius c
    936 Prius v
    861 Prius (liftback)

    10,787 Total for Toyota hybrids. Note the c and v were only introduced during 2012 and were not on sale for the full year.

    They also sold 2,300 Lexus hybrids in 2012.

    Unfortunately the July 2013 figures I found did not break apart the sales of Camry models, so I have no idea how many of the Camrys were hybrids.

    I just happened across some newer Australian figures which I haven't seen in a long time so I figured I might update this post for anyone interested.

    The numbers come from a comparison of announcements of two versions of "50,000 hybrids sold in Australia"... they counted the first milestone including Lexus hybrids in March 2013 and the second milestone excluding Lexus hybrids in February 2014.

    All-time sales of Toyota hybrids to the end of March 2013 was:

    Camry ... 20,087
    Prius ... 18,168
    Prius c ... 2,500
    Prius v ... 1,191

    All-time sales of Toyota hybrids to the end of February 2014 was:

    Camry ... 25,452
    Prius ... 18,682
    Prius c ... 4,521
    Prius v ... 2,016

    That gives sales over the 11 months between April 2013 and February 2014 of:

    Camry Hybrid ... 5365
    Prius c ... 2021
    Prius v ... 825
    Prius ... 514

    Still feels kind of weird driving a Toyota and a niche vehicle at the same time. :)

    Those figures are about the same as the UK except we have double the population and double your petrol costs.

    Consumer Reports said the C was too small & noisy. They have the right to hold a negative opinion, just as you have the right to dislike Hummers and other SUVs.

    I rode a Camry Hybrid in Chicago..... the taxi driver said he loved it. I guess luggage space wasn't an issue.

    Prius Liftback is only 25% more expensive than the C in the States, so I guess that's why it sells. What is the price differential in Australia?

    ~$27K for Prius c iTech (similar to top spec c in the USA)

    ~$34K for Prius base
    ~$45K for Prius iTech (similar to Prius 4+5 combined, minus LKA I think)

    Note the above are the manufacturer Recommended Retail Prices in AUD excluding various charges you can't get out of, but then of course there's always your bargaining ability.

    I think the liftback sales are probably competing more with the Camry Hybrid (RRP $35490 for the Camry H, $41490 for the Camry HL). For the time being at least, the Camry hybrid is also locally built, including the engine.

    Yes, you need to add $3K for the "on road cost."

    What a shame that would be for Toyota closing the plant. They are making some pretty good cars with good international demands. Oh well, decision was made, enjoy the last 3 years while you can.

    Such a shame. The Aussie built RHD Camry could have been sold here in the UK and/or Ireland, but wasn't. Must be some reason but equally maybe it was a deliberate thing? Holden used to make the Vauxhall Omega and the estate version of the Vauxhall Cavalier in the 80's and other joint ventures in the 70's. Yet stopped and now Holden have gone/are going.

    Shame.

    I see that the base Prius Hatchback is a lot less than the i tech and a bit less than the base Hybrid Camry. I'd probably buy the base Prius but I guess that not everyone would make the same decision.

    I agree. Camry should sell in Europe, like previoulsy (until '98?) despite the trim levels and quality interior don't cope easily with the trims found in an Avensis (bit smaller than a Camry).
