I'm devistated. Two recalls so far, and I don't need either. I called this morning, and the young lady couldn't find my VIN on the list.

    Ah, well...

When I called the Toyota Service Center on Tuesday to find out if my VIN was involved (yes) I asked what the issue was. What I was told over the phone was that it is an important but not critical and has something to do with a potential for the earlier version of ECU software to miss some diagnostic error codes and the SSC 40D update would correct this.

Yes, I was also told over the phone that it was important but not critical and that it has something to do with the diagnostic ECU software to miss some diagnostic error codes.

This may be true because at about 8K miles I got a check engine/red exclaimation point briefly and when I checked the codes I found nothing.(I'm now past 12K and everything is A-okay)

I have made an appointment to have the SSC40D work done on Monday, and will post a report of everything in this thread shortly after.

    ~Andrew

PS I hate going into the dealer too. Wish me luck.

The issue has to do with the inability of the service tool to correctly read some diagnostic codes under certain conditions. The problem is reported to be a software error in the powertrain ECU, which communicates the fault codes to the service tool. The recall is required because the inability to read emissions related codes violates the OBD-II requirements, making the vehicle non-compliant with current emissions laws. Thus, all must be fixed to preserve the EPA certification, as well as certain state certifications such as California.

    Recall card

I got a postcard from my dealer, not a letter from Toyota. The recall refered to is #22-I-22049. Nothing about 40D. I'll have to ask the dealer why no letter. My VIN ends in 9025.

    Me too (on the 40D)

My Prius is at the dealership now getting its 5K service and the work done on the SSC-40D recall. The dealership hadn't heard of this recall (bought my Prius in another state and just had a postcard), so my Prius is their guinea pig...lucky me! I'll let you know how it all turns out.

...I guess it all turned out fine. It was a problem with the ECU and it not reporting correctly to some the scan tools the service people use to diagnose Prius problems. Okay, now I'm ready for the Guess Gauge fix! Come on, Toyota!!

Man, we are all ready for the guess guage fix  The doctors at Toyota simply have to do something about this bladder shrinkage condition that's been causing premature fuel spurtage!

Maybe you should only wash it with cold water and not rub it too much.....

Oh wait....I just realized you were talking about the car.

    Never mind then

i havent heard anything from my dealership about that ECU update. should i inquire or just wait for a notification? did all of you receive a letter regarding this? can it wait? i'm thinking of asking about it and having it done when i bring it in at 5000miles.

My dealer's service department did the recall while my car was in for mudflap installation. The first I heard about the recall is when I went to pick up my car at the end of the day. The service rep said that they only got the recall notice two days beforehand.

What did they charge you to install the mud flaps? If you don't mind sharing. I guess I never even gave a thought to having someone else do it b/c it was quite simple and took only about 30-45 minutes.

On the evening that I was picking up the car, I was running down my list
of dealer add-ons with the dealer's accessory salesshark. One of my requested add-ons were the mudflaps. I was assuming at the time that the dealership had or could obtain the correct molded Toyota mudflaps that are offered as an option in Canada and the SE U.S. but not the Mid-Atlantic region for some odd reason. I was expecting to pay the SE Toyota price of $89 but the salesshark was unmoveable at $149. :x

Well, what the dealer first installed were some generic flat mudflaps that looked like they came out of a JC Whitney magazine. You know the kind, the only thing that they were missing were the Yosemite Sam cartoon character with "Back Off" inscribed below him.

I worked with my salesman and the Business Manager who were both mystified as to why Toyota markets the genuine mudflaps so strangely. After discussing options with the Business Manager, I went ahead and ordered a set of the real things from Toyota.parts.ca and the dealer's service department installed them for me and reimbursed me for the cost and shipping charges.

Yeah, $149 was expensive, but ultimately I got what I wanted and feel pretty good about the dealer working through this with me.

Why didn't I do the install? Time factor. With a two year old running around the house, time for doing such projects is at a premium.

A week after our first oil change appointment, we received the SSC 40D notice.

Called the service department and got it in the next day. Took 3 hours but that is because they were short handed and did it without long lead time for the appointment.

    Salsa Red #7 VIN 19913

We missed the 40A notice and since this one seemed to have been discussed for awhile, I was hoping we were skipped on this one too. An explanation could be they are sending out notices based upon VIN sequence but you would expect Toyota to be able to do a single database search and send out a mass mailing. Or have they found additional VIN sequences that have to be notified?

    Recall

Just had 5000 mile service and they did the 40D recall. It is only a software modification that allows Toyota dealer service to access diagnostics that they were previously unable to access. Has no effect on you the owner.
    A simple software update!

    A simple software update

In the PC world, uttering that phrase (followed by installing said update) usually results in a complete system crash. :D

(The runner-up phrase is: "See, it's fixed: watch this!")

    thanks.

I have not received a letter from Toyota, but when I called their customer service number they said that my car was affected. Since it is not critical I think I will wait for the 10,000 mile oil change since I just had the 5000 mile oil change done. Does anyone know if you HAVE to have the letter to get the work done or any reason that this should be done sooner than the 10,000 mile checkup?

I just had the 40D update done. It only took 45 minutes. I didn't lose any data or settings on either the phone or navigation screens. However, the ability to toggle info screens from the steering column button does not appear to be part of this update. I wasn't expecting it, but it would have been a handy addition.
