Canadian Prius c fuel economy thread

    I can't tell if I've just been a bad driver this week or what, but my mpg has positively tanked. It's not even been the coldest weather, but I'm barely breaking 10 l/100km on my admittedly short trips between home and work that have been 5-6 l/100km previously. Boo.

    I'm trying hard to stay in the 6's on long trips in my HCH. Short trips are in the 8s. Usually averages to less than 7 for the tank. Winter is a killer. Are you idling a lot or hitting drive thru Timmies?

    Yeah, weather and lots of stop and go traffic are definitely not helping... But I'm still confused since all those factors have been in effect for a few weeks now, and probably aren't even at their worst currently. I'll keep an eye on things over a longer sample period than the last few days, it just feels a little unsettling how sudden and dramatic a change it's been this week.

    Did you check the tyre pressures? Maybe one of them is low (but not low enough to trigger the TPMS).

    Posting from New Zealand! We have had our Pruis C for just about 9 months. I have been (consistently) getting about 4L/100km in city driving (max speed 50kmph) and about 4.6L/100km highway driving (max speed 100kmph). Please note that our highways are not flat and straight - they are up and down hill and windy roads. Occasionally I get really good rates like my best was 2.9L/100km driving about 10km in city!

    I have 9,000 kms on my C now. I am averaging 3.99 l/100 kms so far. Today coming to work (is a 47km trip), I chalked up 3.1 l/100 kms in a mixture of city and some 100 kph driving. I did around 50% of that on EV. So far I am impressed, my fuel costs have halved from my previous auto 2008 Corolla. If you drive over 100 kph you will use more fuel, but you have to look at the reason why you bought this sort of vehicle. When driven for the reason it was created, this is a brilliant vehicle and will return fantastic fuel economy figures. So far I have had no problems at all, love this car.

    My average are 5l/100 flat for an entire year.

    Before winter, my average was 4.6. Incredible car so far!

    yeah, same here, lots of snow and my actual is 5.4L/100. So, that's up about 25% from nicer days...mind you, my Jeep is using about 25% more too! 25% more = what the Prius is using. lol Can't complain, may not be as entertaining as the Jeep is in deep snow, but sure is cheap to operate.

    For the northern hemisphere, Spring is coming (it seems most areas are still experiencing periodic winter-like weather and that doesn't necessarily mean snow). Hopefully this will be the last of it and by the end of April, we'll be back to Spring and warmer temps and better FE.

    ive noticed my mpgs improve alot in the warmer weather now.
    every day on my way home from work i try to do better and better
    20.5km drive
    best so far is 2.9l/100km

    its a different story on the way to work though,
    cold engine jump right onto the highway trip at about 120kph cause im usually running late lol
    around 6.0l/100km..

    Next week I will be celebrating my first anniversary as a C owner. I have the tech plus C with the 16 inch tires. My average is 4.2 lper 100 on just shy of 24,000 Kms. Our winters are much milder than most of Canada so my mileage was less influenced by the cold.

    We have been driving our 2013 C for about a month. On the first 1/2 tank of gas we averaged 4.4 l/100km driving on mostly flat rural and city roads, rarely getting above 80km/hr. Then we went on a road trip from Vancouver Island to the Okanagan and back. We used air conditioning quite extensively (it was hot!), and we had the car packed with gear and dogs. I was nervous about how it would perform over the mountain (Coquihalla and Pennask) passes, but we easily maintained the speed limit. On ascents, we were getting between 5 and 7 l/100km, but the entire trip average was 4.6 l/100km. The number just kept dropping as we rolled through the long stretch of flat Fraser Valley. I was fully impressed.

    Most of our driving is local, short trips and lower speeds, so we expect to have an average in the low 4's. Like vernon birdman, I don't expect our mileage to take a really big hit in the winter. We will see, though.

    I recently purchased a 2013 prius C with a little less than 4000km on it. I'm getting weird readings right as i start my car within seconds of my car rolling. Every time I turn off and restart the car, it resets the "from start" liters/100km to 15. Any one know why? Am I doing something incorrectly?

    I also find that during my commute from work, I often get stuck in about 45mins to an hour worth or stop and go traffic, at which point my battery is no longer charged and I fall completely on gas. Averaging about 6-7L/100km. I've read the comments and notice people average much lower. Any tips on how I could improve this?

    Check the vent in the rear seat. Make sure you have nothing blocking it.

    If you're stuck in traffic for extended periods of time and just using electricity to nudge the car along in a stop & go manner it always drain down the battery. Letting the car glide is something that charges the battery. So occasionally leave a little room between you and the car in front of you, "push" it forward a bit with gas and let the prius glide before stopping.

    It's a good idea to drive around with the battery gauge showing at all times when you're a new hybrid driver so you'll know exactly what energizes it, what drains it or does both simultaneously.

    Thank you for the advice, I will give that driving method a try when stuck in traffic and i'll take a look at that battery gauge screen :)
