How can I change my own oil?

I think all dealers should offer free oil changes for life.

 

I go to JiffyLube for the $24 (conventional - other car) oil change special. I make it very clear EVERYTHING'S fine, I just need an oil change.

 

As much as a car costs, you are absolutely right. The oil only has to be changed every 10,000 miles so a free oil change for life would be nothing for the car dealer.

 

When did we go from "changing my own oil", to this...

 

We just went astray for a second. Greg came up with a brilliant idea and I just had to comment on it. Now, meanwhile, back at the ranch.

 

I changed my oil a few weeks ago. Our regional Toyota dealer had always done a good job for us, with no sales pitch attached. But, I like to do it myself and let that thick malicious oil that hangs out in the pan find its way out. It seems like that is the worst oil of all, and draining for a few hours seems worth the wait. I learned that the filter wrench from my other Prius does not work. (This I learned after starting the draining process - requiring a quick bike trip to the auto parts store) The $30 ramps I bought years ago for the other cars work fine. Taking a couple of hours to serve the car that I love, that serves me without fail is a great alternative to taking it out for dinner and a movie.

 

I love to go astray once in awhile...

Another thought on 3rd gen oil change: that flap local to the drain bolt is brittle. The simplest way to preserve it is to remove the complete panel: affords you a look at the CV boots and to check for leaks.

 

There is a dealer in Columbia SC that gives lifetime oil changes, along with other things like lifetime powertrain warranty, etc.

 

That's just crazy talk. Don't you know: some folks LIKE to change their own oil.
