New Prius C 4 Checking in

    Just joined the you guys to start saving a little money at the pump. My old car was a Matrix XRS that I had put a turbo in with all the bells and whistles. Was getting about 25 MPG Avg for the last year. That and combined with the fact I was using High Test I am looking at significant savings. Looking forward to what I can do to increase my MPG on this car.

    My first fill up was 54.7MPG and that was trying. I still need to work on the Glide routine as it just feels like the car is slowing down a lot faster than I would think when coasting. The one thing that does seem to bother me is when in EV mode even on flat terrain I would think it should maintain it speed a little better with out using as much of the battery as it does. I know it is a new learning curve so I have a lot to learn.

    No, I had a 2003 XRS. I loved the car but found myself trying to squeeze more miles out of it rather than go fast.

    When you want to coast (without slowing down), press the accelerator just enough so there is no blue in the CHG area and no yellow either on the top half of the ECO bar.

    I have been feathering it to that point where it is not charging and using the battery. But it still seems to be slowing down more than I would think. For example going down a slight hill the car still tends to slow.. Now the car still has less than a 750 miles on it so it still might loosen up a little.

    This doesn't sound right. The C is usually a champ at coasting as it comes with low rolling resistance tires . Have you checked tire pressure? I ride at 36/34, which is lower than a lot of C owners who pump it up well over 40 psi for a few extra mpg, and I have never had a problem coasting.

    First thing I did was increase the PSI to 40 on all four. Going to check on the way home tonight to see if any one wheel feels warmer than the others..

    Welcome to priuschat! Watch the video in this link to learn more hypermiling techniques. Other than the lack of a power button, these tips work in the c as well as the liftback.

    The c can't coast very long since its lighter weight means it doesn't have the same momentum a liftback does to help it to coast through the air longer. On the flipside though, less weight also means it doesn't have to work as hard to get the car moving compared to the liftback.

    Congratulations on your purchase. It's real fun to see what good MPG's you can achieve when you first get a C. I've had mine over a year and a half. I drive it like a regular car now and still get excellent mileage. The C is truly a wonderful automobile.

    Good idea to check wheel temp after driving. You could also jack up each wheel and see if they all spin easy. I think it is likely that tire psi will help a lot. I run my tires at 50, it coasts well!

    Wheels don't feel warm to the touch at all. Will play around with the PSI a little but my last tank was at 54.8 so I am not going to complain to much. Averaged 24.9 in the old car so it is double..

    Congrats on the switch to hybrids!

    I had a 2012 Prius C and just traded in for a new 2014 C
    Best car out there!!! to me at least!

    Give it some time, for you to get used to everything and such.
    ALso, the first few miles may have been off a bit from it idling and such before you had it delivered.
    I am on my first tank and sitting pretty at about 53mpg (on dash) but I know there was a lot of gaining as
    it was about 18mpg for the first 2-5 miles or so.

    The C is light, so there is less coasting to be done, but more EV is doable...much more than the Prius LB
