2005 prius just quit at stop light

    hi everyone problem my 2005 Prius just shut off while at a stop light. No warning lights it was running fine. Ended up having it towed. We have no explanation. Checked the battery that was fine checked all the fuses those were fine, checked plugs connections etc all FINE so now what? Its not the transaxle it has to be something simple, but what? If anyone has any suggestions or encountered the same thing open to all ideas. I know I am overlooking something just cant put my finger on it. thanks kris

    It might have overheated. Did you try starting it after it stopped? After maybe 15 minutes?

    instead of checking the car, i suggest having the codes read and reporting them back here. btw, no idea what 'checked the battery, it was fine' means.:) 12 volt? hybrid? if the 12 volt, how did you check it? there are many tests, few of which are accurate.

    how many miles on her?

    1. What is the fuel level?
    2. Are you able to turn on the headlights, blow the horn, lower the windows? Do electrical accessories like the radio work?
    3. Exactly what happens when you try to make the Prius READY?
    4. What was your method to test the items you said were "fine"?

    How long have you owned the car?

    When car stopped at stop sign, did you try to accelerate car forward again?

    ok the fuel was full the lights work the radio works checked the 12v battery with a tester the car at the time of when it stopped working went to the light stopped and when it turned green it would not go it totally shut off. we ended up towing it. the car will not go into ready mode no green light it stays red.
    when you try to power it up the dash board will flash like the blocks for the shifter I cannot get a reading because I cant power it up so there are no codes to see. before hand when the car was working perfectly there were no check engine light no red triangle. I have not encountered this one before. so not sure. yes tried jumping it nothing tried trickle charge nothing. its got to be something simple.

    I don't think the issue is as simple as you suggest - if it was you would have figured it out by now.

    From your post above, I understand that the LED on the POWER button will turn red which means the car is in IG-ON mode.

    If this is correct, do you see all the dashboard warning lights on? If you do, then you should be able to retrieve DTC from the car using Mini VCI.

    Measure the voltage across the 12V battery when the car is IG-OFF, using a decent digital multimeter. If the voltage is less than 12.4V, charge the battery.

    If you don't find any problems then it is time to tow your car to your local Toyota dealer for assistance.

    No there are no warning lights on when you try to power it up it flashes but does not stay on. I am going to have him replace the 12v today with a brand new one. We did switch it out with a different battery from one of our other prius's but I guess process of elimination could the remote have anything to do with it? or the break switch? If someone slammed on the breaks and it triggered the traction control is any of that possible? just trying to figure this out, going to Toyota is not an option. cost way to much. I was not driving this another person was so its hard for me to say what happened other than it just stopped.

    It really sounds like a 12V battery problem to me. I'm thinking replacing the 12V with a known good one will fix it.

    1. Have you replaced the 12V battery yet? Make sure the new battery is fully-charged before you install it.
    2. If the symptom you mentioned in post #13 continues with a new battery, then inspect the following: AM1 and AM2 fuses. IG1 and IG2 relays. Use an ohmmeter to verify the fuses are good, do not rely upon visual inspection. To check the relays, apply 12VDC to the relay coil terminals and measure resistance across the switched terminals. Replace if resistance exceeds 0.5 ohm after accounting for resistance of the meter leads.
    3. If the four parts mentioned above are good then the power source control ECU probably has failed assuming the wiring harness is in good condition.
    4. Consult techinfo.toyota.com if you have questions like: where are these relays located, where is the power source control ECU located, etc. The manual will also provide voltage readings on the wiring harness connector which will help to verify the wiring harness is operational.

    If it happened once, I wouldn't spend a lot of time and money on it. I've had a few strange things happen electronically, but they didn't re-occur, so I forgot about it.

    Nothing was fixed; the same problems never re-occurred. I put it down to something in the software getting scrambled.

    I don't know anything, but I'm assuming it was insignificant, based on the fact that it never reoccurred.
