I just picked up a base model 2009 Prius that has the OEM backup camera installed, but not wired to the MFD. I removed the back panel to fix the 3rd brake light, and the camera wire is just hanging there.

To get it working, do I just have to run the wire from the camera to the back of the MFD? Or is there more to it? If so, what is the part number for the wire?

Additionally, is this common for a base model 09?

    Thanks in advance.

I thought they all had the back up camera in '09? I would expect there is already a connector taped up to the harness for the camera, but I don't think that's all there is to it. got to be some kind of control unit for the camera interface.

The very base model didn't have one. Do you have smart key? because that makes it a package 2 not a base. Capture.PNG

No smart key, just a basic key fob.

Reverse video this might help. It is so you can see it anytime but it shows pictures of the wires that probably aren't there.

Ah, so the backup camera doesn't have its own connection to the MFD.

Anyone have amy knowledge of the connection that goes to the camera and if it is a direct line into the back of the MFD?

I've been researching this for a week or so, hoping to install a camera in our 2005 Prius. Here's what I know, or think I know, so far:

The camera was offered in the 2005 Prius, but only in the Japan market. My 2005 has a knockout at the camera site, just left of the left license plate light, which I believe will accept the OEM camera.

The OEM camera part number is 86790-47020. Since you have access to the camera in your 2009, I'd be grateful if you could confirm this for me. The part number should be clearly visible on the camera. I'd be even more grateful if you could provide a picture or two.

The camera is wired to the navigation unit beneath the driver's seat, so no need to mess with the multi function display unit. This wiring is contained an a harness whose Toyota part number is 82185-47110. This is specific to the 2007 model, but is likely the same for 2005 through 2009. I don't know if this harness is in my 2005 because I've not removed the trim to look around in there. I've been doing a junkyard search for this harness just in case.

If you don't have the navigation feature, you might be out of luck for activating the camera, though it doesn't seem reasonable to include the camera itself without the harness. Maybe the connector is hidden somewhere and just needs to be pulled out from under something. It should be a 4-wire connector whose wires are colored black, white, red, and gray. I'm not sure, but the gray wire might actually be a shield wire in a gray sleeve.

I'm also junkyard searching for a genuine OEM camera that might have been salvaged from a 2006 to 2009 donor car. If you decide against activating your camera, and would like to sell it, please let me know.

Again, I'm just beginning this research, and have not discovered a lot of good data. I could be wrong about some of this, and would be really happy to hear anything anyone wishes to offer,

For 2006-2009 only the top packages had nav. All of the packages except for the Fleet package 1 had the backup camera. Why would Toyota put a DVD player under the driver's seat just for the camera in these cars? I don't remember a box under the driver's seat in my 2006.

The 2005 may be wired differently.

Thank you JimN. This is another clue for my collection. Let me follow through with some guessing.

Guess 0: The Multi Function Display (MFD) has two video inputs.
This was my original guess, which I strayed into this by studying how aftermarket appliances like NavRGB and NAVIKS add camera support by interposing themselves in the video feed to the MFD. But this is incorrect if camera is active with non-nav packages.
    • One input for computer output, the other for the nav unit.
    • Nav unit hosts the camera, if present, and arbitrates camera video and nav video.
Guess 1: The MFD has three video inputs.
    • Inputs are camera, nav unit, and computer-produced presentations.
    • Harness 82185-47110 accommodates all 3 sources and is the same for all packages.
    • Choice of video source is user-selected between nav and computer output.
    • Camera input is selected by reverse signal with priority over other inputs.
    • Fleet package 1 either doesn't install the camera, or leaves it disconnected.

If Guess 1 is correct, jwd001 should be able to locate the harness connector and connect the camera. Hopefully the assembler did not cut the connector off for the 'no camera' option. The wiring diagram for harness 82185-47110 should solve this mystery. I'll try to find it, hoping it is installed in my 2005.

I, too, would like to install a backup camera on my '04. I do have the NAV package and I remember seeing a four prong plug that is in a "dummy" gray plastic piece that looks, all in all, like a relay. I would wonder if I installed the camera and plugged it to that four prong plug? Would I still need the extra wiring?
My wife's Camry Hybrid and my daughter's '14 Corolla have this and I really like being able to see behind me without turning my head (degenerative disc disease sucks).

Where exactly is that dummy plug? On the Nav unit? It might be worth some research.
I was never able to find the harness drawing that includes the camera wiring for a 2005 Prius, so this morning I pried off the hatch trim to have a look. Sadly there is no waiting connector at the camera site. In fact, the cavity in which the camera should mount is boarded up, and some metal cutting will be needed to get into that area.

In case you have not seen it, here is part 1 of a 2-part video showing camera installation in a 2004 Prius. It looks very much like my 2005, so I've watched it a few times. This approach uses the NavTool device to make the installation pretty easy. I ordered a NavTool which should arrive in a week or so.

Sadly, the harness does not include the camera connectors if the vehicle didn't come equipped with reverse camera. No connector at the hatch, no wires on the connectors at the MFD. So, if you managed to install a camera into the hatch, you'd have to wire it all yourself to the "Breakout Box" (or whatever they call it) that connects to the MFD to allow video playback.

    Hello,
Would an owner of a Gen 2 with a back-up camera, be willing to post pictures of the inside of the tailgate with the back panel off? What I am interested in, is the harness that the OEM camera plugs into. Since the OEM camera has a female plug, I want to know what the other side looks like and if there is an adapter that plugs into the wiring harness?
Much thanks in advance. Here is a picture of the Backup camera and harness.....
