    UPDATE

I want to extend a big THANK YOU to everyone who replied to my thread and gave me the help we desperately needed. We've had the car repaired and my daugher is off for home in her 2005 Prius with the NEW BATTERY! I will try and keep this as brief as possible but if my experience can help someone else I want to get as much information out there as possible. We had the battery installed at the dealer today and had a pretty good outcome...but again, without this website, we would have paid almost $4,000....our final bill was $995 (including an oil change and 2 light replacements that were found on the diagnostic test). If anyone is interested, here is what I learned:

    1. This morning we asked the dealer for the specific DTCs ... we found out he had not run the diagnostic (as he had said he did yesterday). He had to call us back later to give us the results of the test. I would never have known to ask for the codes (or that there were codes!) to verify what was wrong with the car if it were not for this forum.

    2. The battery was replaced on a 'goodwill warranty' - the term I found on a thread here somewhere that said to be specific and use those exact words! Toyota corporate as well as the dealer were aware of the term...and as the thread said, you have to call it exactly that. Toyota paid for the battery part itself, we had to pay labor. Our car was 13,000 over the warranty, and living in Maryland, if it had been purchased in 2006, would have been covered to 150,000 miles. It is up to the dealer to ask and Toyota to grant a 'goodwill warranty', but if you don't ask, you don't get!

    3. Toyota corporate told me that each dealership can charge WHATEVER THEY WANT for parts and the msrp is not published (which is why I couldnt find an official price anywhere). They can also charge whatever they want for labor. Therefore, it does pay to shop around factory service centers for a better price, because there may be one out there. Unfortunately this time we were under a time crunch and were unable to do that.

    4. The person I spoke to at the other shop said that they sell refurbished batteries only. He also said that there are NO NEW batteries, that that Toyota also installs refurbished batteries. With that information I then called Toyota corporate who told me that they install only NEW BATTERIES. I am still not sure who to believe on this one - any ideas out there?

So, thanks to everyone who added their 2 cents...it is much appreciated and it helped so much! On a side note...my 23 year old daughter was pretty impressed and learned a valuable life lesson about car dealerships and their service departments. She's very savvy and able to fend for herself, but this was a new experience, she got first hand experience in dealing with automotive repairs, and appreciated the effort and knowledge!! :)

Most dealers sell ONLY brand new zero mile batteries from Japan, that is why they are so expensive....and the best option especially if warranty is paying for it. Whoever told you dealers only sell refurbished batteries was lying to you. I guess there are a few dealers that could OFFER refurbished batteries, but I've never seen one do so. Glad it all worked out. It looks like hanging out on PriusChat a few hours saved you a couple thousand dollars...time well spent.

This is great news! I apologize for not seeing this thread sooner, but you did better than I might have imagined.
Glad I did not get a chance to screw it up.

Give us a few details: what state was car orig purchased (MD?)
What state was the car registered in at the time of repair (MD?)
I'd also be curious to know dealership that helped and did the work, if in MD.

See my write-up on CARB Warranty Ins and Outs. MD was not a CARB member until 2011, so you are not covered according to Toyota's unique rules. We have had several 2006 MD Prii had to pay for battery replacement. But all Prii are CARB certified so I feel Toyota may be out on a limb, if you live in a CARB state, trying to say they have some rationale for disqualifiying 150k miles CARB warranty. Especially a 2006, I do not think there is any verbiage in our warranty manual (like there is today) saying the car has to meet Toyota special rules of being purchased, driven in, and registered in a CARB state in time of repair. If you look at FORD or GM hybrid warranties, it just says if you're registered in a CARB state at the time of repair, you're covered to 150k miles (assuming vehicle is CARB certified version, which all Prii are).
