Although I know for a fact that some dealerships have questionable practices and philosophies, I am still of the opinion that knowledge and courtesy are the most powerful tools one can bring to any table.

As to Fl_Prius_Driver's suggestion, monitoring of this engine will be similar to how we monitor the health of those big jet engines. Additionally, I will likely use Blackstone (or one of the others) as an added measure since a baseline has been established.

As to the technician, I asked not to here any details as this is not something that I need or want to know, however the implication was given that this incident might have been used as the excuse or final straw. For everyone's consideration please note...I did not go in wishing someone fired, only that the mistake was taken care of.

...anyways, target aquired and destroyed in less than 24. I'm happy. :)

I don't think anyone in this thread thought you wanted to have anyone let go. My comment simply meant that I doubt he was let go because of this one incident, if in fact he was let go. Your post made it sound like you were feeling guilty, that's all.

I do feel bad "if in fact he was let go", but that's not my decision/problem.

Correction...the extended warranty up to 186,510 total vehicle miles applies to the engine only...not the entire drive-train.

I hope you got that in writing.......and signed by the OWNER of the dealership or someone at Toyota.
Verbal contracts aren't worth the paper they are written on. ;)

I'm curious--is this extended coverage by this dealer exclusively?

Signed by their Director of Service and in the computer. This is a Dealer Extended Warranty...all costs for authorized work related will be handled by them...regardless where the work is/was performed. Though they would prefer I use them, this stipulation was given should I feel butt sore about the oil filter ooops. This is an acceptable deal, done with an out should the engine show it's -ss. I will know the status of the engine before the next 5,000 mile oil/filter change.

That's (at least) two cases cited here, of 3rd gen oil filter change screw up. I wouldn't be surprised if they go back to more typical disposable spin-on filter, for next generation.

In Frodoz' case, I'd speculate that "Oil Filter was loose..." was in fact a misplaced, or just missed O-ring. With css28 it was the case of the missing filter element.

This latest oil filter design is commendable, in that it reduces the waste to a single oil soaked filter, with a bit of embedded plastic. But the implementation has two too many possible gotchas, maybe more.

One element of a good design, neglected here, is that it's near-impossible to screw up, and if you do it's in-your-face obvious when you wrap up, not lurking.

The latest oil filter design is mandatory (as opposed to a spin-on) to sell these cars in Europe.

You're not going to see a return to the spin on.

I owned a BMW E36 for 13 years with a replaceable element oil filter with no complaints.

Is part of the problem not being able to start the car to see if there are any leaks given the cover, etc.?

This is a case of an honest dealer doing their job. Too bad it seems exceptional instead of routine. It really helps that frodoz was honest and professional also. He reported the issue, followed the instructions, and let the dealer figure out the best course of followup.

Imagine what would have happened if someone had gone to Fly-By-Night-Oil-Changes. That would have been a far different story.

    I think not.
The "cover" is actually part of the filter housing and it has a radially squeezed o-ring. This is an excellent application for such an o-ring since it doesn't rely on how tightly things are assembled--the squeeze results from the difference of outer and inner diameters of the cover and adapter based, respectively. Its other attraction is that it provides substantial prevailing torque friction that should prevent the cover from loosening itself.
In this particular case I suspect the old o-ring was removed and a new one forgotten.

    It probably started dripping immediately.

I suspect he meant the cover under the engine (the one with the oil-change access flap), not the cover you're writing about.

Which is brand new now. No leaks were found on initial delivery inspection. I might use a mirror from now on though...if I let someone else do the lazy for me.

Yeah I think doubleDAZ is referring to the engine underpanel (masking oil leaks). It has areas of some sort of quilted material, insulation or sound-deadening, on the inside, might blot up the first bit of an oil leak.

Looks like several design choices working in concert, in the wrong direction.

I was talking about the plastic cover beneath the car. Wouldn't that keep someone from noticing a leak right away, especially a small one? I always start my cars and look underneath before driving them off the ramps just to make sure there are no leaks.
