News: Toyota recalls first-generation Prius hybrids
    03 Apr 06 16:20

Toyota in the UK has recalled all first-generation Prius hybrids after it was discovered the hybrid battery pack can leak.

The leakage, which Toyota says does not pose a safety threat, can affect all models sold in the period of 2000-03 and affects 1,239 petrol/electric hybrids in the UK.

According to a Toyota spokesman, letters have been sent to all Prius Mk1 owners on its dealer database warning them that 'a small amount of electrolyte leakage could develop around one of the hybrid battery terminals' and asking that they book the car into their dealer so the battery can be resealed.

Electrolyte is the liquid conductor at the heart of the battery that provides back-up power to the 1.5-litre engine. However, unlike with standard lead-acid batteries, the electrolyte used in the Prius's nickel metal hydride battery pack is alkaline and therefore less corrosive.

Toyota isn't classifying the work as a recall, but instead a 'customer satisfaction campaign'. That means the company have judged the problem isn't serious enough to be logged as a 'safety campaign' with the government's vehicle safety agency, VOSA (Vehicle and Operator Services Agency), but it also means Toyota isn't allowed access to DVLA records to track down owners.

The campaign comes on the heels of a global recall last year of the current Prius to cure a stalling problem identified by US owners. Some drivers had been left stranded after the computer shut down the petrol engine without warning and cut the power available from the electric motor. That affected 160,000 cars made between 2003 and 2004 and was fixed with a software patch.

Toyota has instructed dealers to give affected Prius Mk1 owners a bottle of champagne, and to return their car valeted and with a tank of fuel.

Sounds good. We never seem to get that kind of service here.

I guess it beats feeding them champagne while they wait and then making them drive it home themselves.

This is strange that it is similar to SSC-40G issued two years ago.

Has this not already been done in the US... with out the champagne or the full tank! Daxx those britts they get everything all the good beer, the chicks, and now the upgrade! Enough is enough. No taxation with out representation. I suggest we dump all the Toyota Echos in the US into Boston Harbor!

Of course we need to dress up as "wild Indians" and stay away from the redcoats. Lets do it I am on the next plane for Boston with all the Echos I can collect in my luggage. Do you think that I will have to pay extra for the weight?

Exactly. Why do we have Sequoias? (the truck, not the tree :p). Is the Land Cruiser not enough? I mean the Land Cruiser is to Toyota what the Range Rover is to Land Rover. The Sequoia made no sense to me. In Canada, the Limited version is $63k before taxes. That's $1,000 less than a loaded RX350 or about the same price as a Land Cruiser converted into CAD.

I got this recall when I had my '03 Prius. Same, Same. They had it for the better part of a day. I wonder why they waited so long to do this in Europe?

Yep, Toyota UK is just getting around to the hybrid battery resealant for the 2001-most 2003 Prius (and the hybrid Estima). I got my US SSC 40G notice later than most, and that was in the summer of 2004...

Because we had moved a couple of times, I think we got ours sometime in 2005. However given that it was my wife's car and I could never figure out when I could take it for a day, I hadn't had the opportunity to take it in until 2 reminder notices later.

End result - no bottle of champaigne, but since it was an all-day procedure (actually, they took 2 days on it due to tech backup w/ the 60C campaign), I was given a rental. TRAC was fresh out of cars, so I ended up getting an '06 Avalon from Hertz (on Toyota of course). Much faster than either Prius, but I was lucky to get 25.5mpg on it's MFD. Amazing what Prius features were integrated into the Avalon as well (some improved upon).

For those who had it done, did the car act "funny" for the first few minutes? Mine was lunging a bit as it felt some charging resistance, but then would back off as the engine sounded like it was going to stall (or at least lower than normal idle speed). It quit after a few minutes though - but was an odd experience.
