I realize that the people who run this forum didn't design the interface, but it would be nice to be able to set the number of threads displayed per page (correct me if it's already possible to do this). I know that during the days of dial-up, it was necessary to load a reasonably small number of posts per page, otherwise you'd be forever waiting for the page to load, but nowadays, virtually everyone has high-speed internet, therefore the option to load more postings per page makes more sense.

Connection speed is only a small part of the equation. The server has to deal with a massive number of requests all at the same time. Serving less to more is typically the better choice than larger to few. Don't forget about all the phones actively checking for updates either.

Also, being "high speed" doesn't necessarily mean fast. It varies tremedously from location to location.

Using SPEEDTEST, mine just clocked in at 33.05 Mbps... which is quite fast, until you compare it with one coffeeshop I frequent which delivers 78.90 Mbps. Sadly, some people are still stuck with just 10. Others have to tolerate only 4... which is painfully slow, but still better than dial-up.

I hadn't considered the server end of it, but it seems to me that text content shouldn't create much of a system load. And additionally, longer pages would result in fewer server-requests, so the actual amount of overhead might actually be less. I've seen other forums where you could set the number of postings per page, so I'm sure it's doable.

The database is also taxed. With so many updates taking place, retrieval comes secondary.

I'm a software engineer. Stuff like this is what I have to deal with on a regular basis. It's not pretty sometimes. Finding a happy balance for varying load can be quite a challenge.

Not to belabor the point, but wouldn't fewer page requests result in fewer updates?

Updates are new posts and edits, a process independent of requests to read.

As I could not find the option in my preferences, my searching has led me to this thread. I figured I'd tag it with my desire to see more posts/threads per page as well. When I view a thread, I'd like to see 50 or even a hundred replies per page. Makes it so much easier to read and follow along with the discussion instead of having to load the next page every handful of seconds. Trying to follow a 30+ page thread with only a few replies per page is absolute insanity. I'd much prefer to set my forum prefs to show 50-100 per page..both of thread lists and replies within.

What about a compromise where there is a button at the bottom to "view all replies"? I've seen forums with that option and love it.
